Period pain is something which almost every woman will encounter at some point in their lives. Others may even experience it on a frequent basis. While many women will normally endure small amounts of pain during menstruation, sometimes this pain will be more intense and uncomfortable than usual. It might be associated with heavy bleeding, also known as menorrhagia; or the presence of a condition, such as endometriosis, whereby tissue in other parts of the body starts to develop a lining like the womb.
Each month, the reproductive system undertakes various processes in order to get ready for pregnancy. One of these involves the buildup and shedding of the lining of the uterus. A fertilised egg latches onto this lining and begins its development into an embryo. However, when fertilisation does not take place, this wall covering sheds and is discharged via menstrual bleeding.
Muscular movements around the womb are required for this shedding to take place, and these can cause feelings of pain and discomfort.
In the body, the particular process involving the buildup and discharge of the womb lining is managed by a hormone called progesterone. When the presence of this hormone drops, the uterine lining builds up and sheds, and this process can sometimes result in pain in cases where stiffer muscle contractions are required.
Both Primolut N, which is a medicine made by Bayer, and Utovlan, by Pharmacia, temper this process by supplementing levels of this hormone with norethisterone, their active ingredient. This results in the uterine lining developing and being released in more manageable amounts, so that less exertion is required on the part of the muscles in the womb, and as a result, less pain is felt.

Primolut N and Utovlan contains a synthetic version of a natural hormone, called progesterone. This treatment functions by temporarily altering the way the body manages the lining of the uterine wall, but cannot be taken in addition to the contraceptive pill.

In Primolut N and Utovlan, the artificial hormone keeps this growth and exuviation under control, and reduces feelings of pain and discomfort.

Utovlan and Primolut N contain the same ingredient, but the side effects they induce may be slightly different. Common side effects across both include headache, reduced menstrual bleeding and ‘spotting’ between periods.
