Utovlan is a treatment for period pain and heavy periods. It contains a hormone called norethisterone as its active ingredient, which works in the same way in the body as progesterone, by regulating menstruation. In addition to period pain, Utovlan, which is marketed by Pharmacia, also treats endometriosis and premenstrual syndrome.
- Relieves period pain
- Eases heavy bleeding
- Straightforward tablet medication
Every month, the female body undertakes various processes to prepare itself for pregnancy. One of these sees the formation of a lining along the uterine wall (or the endometrium), in readiness to receive a fertilised egg, and provide it with a basis from which to develop. In cases where this insemination does not occur, the lining simply is shed and exits the body through menstrual bleeding.
To assist this shedding, the muscle walls of the womb contract, and this can sometimes lead to feelings of pain. This happens when the muscles around the womb tighten and restrict the flow of blood and oxygen to some parts of it. In response, the body then releases chemicals called prostaglandins, exacerbating pain and increasing the severity and rate at which these muscles contract.
Progesterone works to manage this process. The development of the uterine wall lining comes about as levels of the hormone fall, and then subsequently sheds. In Utovlan, the functioning agent works by mimicking the action of this hormone, and its presence helps to lessen the severe buildup and shedding of the wall lining; reducing bleeding, muscular contractions and pain as a result.
