Dermacort is a medication used to treat skin conditions, such as dermatitis and eczema. It is a topical cream which is applied to the affected area of skin twice daily, for no longer than a week. The medication contains a type of corticosteroid, called hydrocortisone. Dermacort, which is marketed in the UK by Marlborough, is only available to buy online with a prescription. This is so that a doctor can make sure that it is suitable prior to issue.

  3. One week course

Eczema causes the skin to become very dry. This can lead to symptoms such as cracked skin, redness, irritation and itching. The areas of the body which tend to be affected most by eczema are the backs of the knees, the arms and hands. It can also occur on the face and scalp.

No-one knows why eczema happens in some people and not others. However, the condition has been linked to allergies and asthma. This, combined with the inflammatory nature of the condition, has led many experts to posit that it is related to an overactive immune system.

Symptoms typically go through periods of flare-up and remission. Common eczema triggers might be allergens such as pollen or chemicals in cosmetic products, such as shampoos or soaps. Hormonal changes in the body, as well as medications, also have the potential to cause a flare.

When treating the condition, a doctor may choose to issue a topical cream such as Dermacort to help reduce the severity of symptoms. The functioning constituent in this medicine is hydrocortisone, which is a type of drug called a corticosteroid. This works by reducing the effects of chemicals released by the immune system, soothing inflammation and thereby alleviating soreness and irritation.

We only provide this item on a renewal basis to patients who are already using it under the instruction of their doctor or specialist. If you have not had your symptoms seen by a doctor, you should make an appointment with your GP in person.

This will then be reviewed by one of our doctors, who will grant a prescription if suitable. Once approved, your order will be dispensed by our pharmacy and shipped by next-day courier.

How to use Dermacort

When using this medication, it is vital to follow the directions given by your prescriber, and also to familiarise yourself with the instructions in the patient information leaflet prior to use. This will help you to lower the risk of side effects and get the most beneficial results from the medication.

  1. Apply as prescribed.
  2. This, in most cases, will be a thin layer spread over the affected area, twice a day.
  3. Roughly two fingertip units (as demonstrated in the leaflet) is enough for both hands or a single foot.
  4. For the treatment of one whole arm, three fingertip units should suffice.
  5. When applying, carefully rub in the cream until it has disappeared.
  6. Make sure you wash your hands both before and after use.
  7. It should not be used for more than one week. Where symptoms persist, contact your doctor.

The above is intended only as a guide. More detailed information can be located in the leaflet provided.
