Haelan is a type of medicine called a corticosteroid, and is used to alleviate skin conditions such as psoriasis. It works by reducing the effects of inflammatory chemicals released by the immune system, thereby lessening redness and irritation in the area affected. Supplied as a tape or a cream application, Haelan is marketed by Typharm and is only available to buy in the UK on prescription.

Psoriasis is a condition which affects patches of the skin, and causes a number of symptoms, including redness, irritation, itchiness and soreness. Silver scale-like flakes may also develop, and in rare cases, infection leading to pustules. These patches will usually appear on the elbows, knees, lower back or the scalp, but can manifest anywhere on the body.
Roughly two out of every 100 people in the UK has psoriasis. It is a chronic condition, which means that it passes through periods of activity and dormancy, and can be initiated by one of a number of triggers. This may be increased stress, the excessive consumption of alcohol, a reaction to medication, smoking, injury to the skin or an infection.
It isn’t fully understood why the condition occurs, but it is thought to be the result of an overactive immune system. The body, when it perceives a threat, will release certain inflammatory chemicals which can induce redness and swelling in a particular area. In autoimmune conditions however, there is often no threat present and the body’s defences are attacking healthy cells or tissue. In the case of psoriasis, this leads to the overproduction of replacement skin cells before the old ones are ready to be shed, causing redness, itching and flaking.
The active ingredient in Haelan, which is available as a cream or an adhesive tape, is fludroxycortide, a corticosteroid. This works by reducing the activity of inflammatory chemicals in the body, which are discharged by the immune system. In doing so, it alleviates irritation and helps the skin affected to heal.
