Product information

Clotrimazole is a type of cream used in fungal infections. It is the generic version of Canesten, and can help to treat athlete’s foot, ringworm, and external genital thrush. It is a pharmacy medicine, which means that it doesn’t require a prescription; a pharmacist can issue Clotrimazole, but they will need to ask some questions about the nature of the infection and your overall health to make sure it is suitable.

Fungal infections manifest in a range of forms, both inside and outside the body. Certain fungi and yeasts live on the skin in small amounts harmlessly in many cases. However, under some conditions, fungi can thrive and start to multiply, and this is when they can cause an infection.

Symptoms of a fungal skin infection include irritated, itchy or cracked skin, raised red bumps (rash) and soreness. These symptoms can differ depending on where on the body the infection occurs. In athlete’s foot, for example, cracked skin appears between the toes and on the soles of the feet. Ringworm can develop anywhere, such as on the arms, legs or back, and causes a red ring to form on the skin. When ringworm develops in the groin, it’s called jock itch.

Thrush is another type of fungal infection, which can develop on or around the genitals. This can cause skin irritation, discomfort, and sometimes discharge from the penis or vagina. Discharge is often a sign of internal thrush; whereas symptoms apparent on the skin are external thrush. It’s quite common for genital thrush to occur both internally and externally.

Fungal infections are treated with antifungal medicine. There are various different types; some, such as pessaries and vaginal cream, can be used internally for thrush. Others can be used to treat infections occurring on the outside of the body, such as jock itch, ringworm, athlete’s foot and external thrush.

Clotrimazole is a cream that can be applied to fungal skin infections, and external thrush. It contains an active ingredient of the same name, which works by preventing the fungus from producing a substance it requires to survive, called ergosterol. Once it can no longer produce ergosterol, the cells of the fungus become weaker, and less able to maintain their structure. The fungus then dies and the infection starts to subside.
