Product information

The YourSelfTest Chlamydia Test Kit is useful for home use, and is a convenient way of testing for infection. The test kit can be used by both men and women and is a straightforward way to check for chlamydia.

It’s a very simple process to follow. When carrying out the test, you’ll need to insert a sterilised swab into your vaginal canal or urethra to collect a sample, then put this into a test tube and add a few drops from a small bottle of liquid. Mix this, then add a few drops from a second bottle and mix again. Finally, squeeze three drops onto a testing cassette and await results. You will receive results within 15 minutes if a test has been executed correctly.

Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the UK. It can be passed from person to person through unproteced sex (sex with the absence of a condom). It is said to be more prominent amongst teenagers and young people. However, anybody can become infected with chlamydia.

Chlamydia can be spread through oral, vaginal or anal sex and also through the use of sex toys.

It is caused by a parasitic bacteria known as chlamydia trachomatis. Around one in 10 young people have chlamydia. Symptoms are often not visible, and many who are carrying the infection remain unaware. This is why you should have annual tests if you’re sexually active and take a test whenever you change sexual partner.

There are some symptoms to look out for, however. If you develop a painful sensation while urinating or notice penile, vaginal or rectal discharge, it is advisable you make an appointment with your GP or visit a sexual health clinic.

In women, pain in the stomach area or bleeding between periods after sex are possible symptoms; and in men, pain and swelling in the penis or testicles can occur.

Chlamydia left untreated can cause infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease, regardless of whether symptoms are showing.

If you do test positive for chlamydia, don’t panic. Getting treatment for chlamydia is usually a relatively straightforward process of receiving a prescription for a course of oral antibiotics like Azithromycin or Doxycycline. Pregnant women who test positive for chlamydia may be advised to use an alternative such as Erythromycin.

The YourSelfTest Chlamydia Test Kit is easy to use and straightforward, and should take no longer than a total of 20 minutes.

You can buy the YourSelfTest Chlamydia Test Kit using our secure and discreet online service, and receive it within one working day. To help ensure your privacy, all orders are shipped from our UK pharmacy in secure, unmarked packaging.

Sex after chlamydia

If you test positive for chlamydia, you should get treated straight away and stop having sex immediately. Before you resume sexual activity, you must first finish a course of treatment for chlamydia and then take another test. We advise waiting for three weeks after treatment before taking a second test, as this will allow for all traces of the infection to exit the body.

Directions

The result of this test may be compromised if you fail to read and follow the instructions provided. This test is for single use only.

  1. Keep this kit at between 2-30°C. A test carried out after the expiry date shown on the sealed pouch may not provide reliable results.
  2. Do not remove the test cassette from its pouch until you intend to use it.
  3. Avoid contact between hands and eyes or nose. Refrain from eating, drinking or smoking while in the general area of the test kit.
  4. Do not reuse tests.
  5. Avoid cross-contamination by using a new extraction tube for each specimen obtained.
  6. Do not use cytology brushes if pregnant or breastfeeding.
  7. Wash your hands with soap and water before you use the YourSelfTest Chlamydia kit.
  8. Make sure you feel comfortable.
  9. (For women) Open the vagina using two fingers and carefully insert the sterilised swab until the tip is no longer visible. If there is vaginal discharge, remove it using the cotton swab first.
  10. (For men) Insert the swab into the urethra between 2-4 cm. This may cause mild discomfort, but should not feel painful.
  11. (Both men and women) Rotate the swab while inserted for around 5-10 seconds.
  12. Carefully remove the swab and place it inside the test tube.
  13. Next, add eight drops of Reagent 1 to the test tube.
  14. Squeeze the test tube around 15 times and rotate the swab while inside.
  15. Now, hold the cotton swab inside the test tube for a subsequent two minutes.
  16. Add eight drops of Reagent 2 to the test tube.
  17. As before, compress the test tube around fifteen times and rotate the swab.
  18. Remove the swab. It is important to squeeze out any contents it may have soaked up back into the test tube.
  19. Seal the test tube with the enclosed cap.
  20. Remove the cassette from its packaging and add 3 drops of the test tube specimen into the cavity marked ‘S’. It is located at the bottom of the cassette.
  21. Wait for 15 minutes.
  22. Any result read after 20 minutes is not considered reliable. During the waiting time, one, two or no coloured lines will appear in the compartment next to the parts labelled ‘C’ (Control line) and ‘T’ (Test line).
  23. If two coloured lines appear at ‘C’ and ‘T’, the result is positive. You should get advice from your nearest GUM clinic. Because you’ve been exposed to chlamydia, you might have caught other infections too so you’ll need to be tested for all STIs. Or, you can order chlamydia treatment online from us. To make the process more straightforward, evidence of a positive test result is required and a form of photo ID to upload during your secure consultation. We recommend you have a camera or phone ready before completing the test to take a picture of the result, because the test cassette does not display results permanently.
  24. If one coloured line appears at ‘C’, this confirms a negative result and the presence of chlamydia has not been detected. To confirm an absence of infection, a second test is advisable. So whilst being negative for Chlamydia is good news, it doesn’t tell you whether you’ve caught anything else so make sure you test for all STIs if you’ve been at risk of catching Chlamydia. So whilst being negative for chlamydia is good news, it doesn’t tell you whether you’ve caught anything else so make sure you test for all STIs if you’ve been at risk of catching chlamydia.
  25. Should a coloured line appear at ‘T’, but not ‘C’: this is an inconclusive result and a second test will be required.
  26. Should no lines appear at all, this is also inconclusive and a second test will again be required.

Detailed and illustrated instructions can be found on the information leaflet that comes with the test.

Q&A

How does the YourSelfTest Chlamydia Test Kit work?

Simply insert the swab into your urethra or vaginal canal to collect a sample. This is then tested against antibodies which can identify the presence of the parasitic bacteria that causes chlamydia.

Do I need to wait for lab results?

No, this test will not be sent to a lab nor will you have to wait for results. It is a home screening kit readily available for your own personal use.

How long will I have to wait for my results?

The test should take no longer than five minutes to do, and a reading is visible within 15 minutes of applying your specimen to the results cassette.

Is it painful to use the test?

A sterilised cotton swab will have to be inserted into the urethra or vaginal canal to collect a sample, but in the majority of cases this should not cause any pain.

What if my results are negative?

If your results are negative, you don’t need to do anything. You can continue to practice safe sex and we advise you seek out regular annual testing. If your results are inconclusive, a second test will be required.

What if my results are positive?

If your results are positive, it is important not to feel ashamed or begin to panic. Chlamydia is relatively simple to cure and treatment can be sought from a GUM clinic or your GP, or you can order it securely online from us.

Can chlamydia be cured?

A course of antibiotics should clear the infection and rid you of the disease, some of which we offer at our online pharmacy. Please note, should you wish to purchase treatment for chlamydia, we will require photo evidence of a positive test result and photo ID to ensure the people receive the correct online treatment. All personal data is stored securely.

When can I have sex again?

There are some steps to take before sexual activity can be resumed. We recommend finishing your course of treatment, waiting for three weeks to ensure any remnants of infected bacteria have been properly eradicated and finally completing a second confirmatory test.

Once I am chlamydia free, can I get it again?

There’s no limit to the number of times you can be infected with chlamydia. Never assume you’re immune if treatment is successful in the first instance of infection. Lower your chances of catching chlamydia again by practicing safe sex and seeking regular tests. We recommend getting tested for all STIs annually if you’re sexually active.

Should I get tested even if I don’t display symptoms?

Yes. Symptoms of chlamydia can often not be present. Just because nothing seems to be wrong, doesn’t mean that’s the case. If you’ve had unprotected sex, recently changed sexual partner or are sexually active and it’s been a while since your last test, we recommend you seek tests for sexually transmitted infections.

To get the YourSelfTest Chlamydia kit online, complete our short order form. Test kits are shipped from our UK pharmacy by next-day parcel in discreet, secure packaging.
