Product information

The Syphilis Anonymous Home Test is a screening kit from YourSelfTests, allowing men and women to home test for syphilis. It contains a lancet which is used for pricking the finger. Two drops of blood are then deposited in the sample well of the test cassette, along with two drops of a diluting agent. The cassette informs you of your result within 10-15 minutes.

If you get a positive result for syphilis, you should visit your nearest GUM clinic as soon as possible, or arrange to see your GP.

Syphilis is caused by a bacterial infection called Treponema Pallidum (or TP). It’s typically contracted via sex with someone who is infected.

In most cases it can be treated with a short course of antibiotics, although it can have serious consequences if left untreated. You can also contract syphilis on more than one occasion, in spite of having been treated for the infection before.

Symptoms are not always apparent and some people don’t have any. Where there are symptoms, they tend to develop within two or three weeks of infection, and the biggest indicator is a small and painless sore or ulcer called a chancre. In men, the sore is often on the penis. In women, the sore might appear around the vagina. The sores can also appear around the anus, but sometimes on the fingers, in the mouth or on the buttocks.

Without initial treatment, further symptoms, known as secondary syphilis, can develop.

They can include: sores or ulcers on the penis, vagina or around the anus, a blotchy rash that affects the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, and white patches in the mouth.

If syphilis is left untreated, it can persist for years or even decades without any symptoms. Tertiary syphilis is a result of the infection spreading to the nerves or brain, and can cause meningitis and strokes.

Treatment for syphilis is dependent on how long you’ve had the infection. If you’ve had syphilis for less than two years, treatment tends to take the form of a penicillin injection into the buttocks, or a 10-14 day course of antibiotic tablets as an alternative to penicillin.

If syphilis has lasted for more than two years, it is often treated with three penicillin injections into the buttocks on a weekly basis. If someone is unable to take penicillin (for example, if they’re allergic to it) a 28 day course of antibiotic tablets may be recommended.

Cases in which the brain is affected tend to be treated with daily penicillin injections into the buttocks or a vein for two weeks, or a 28 day course of antibiotics instead of penicillin.

At the end of treatment, it is advised that you have follow-up blood tests to ensure that the treatment has worked. After zero presence of syphilis has been concluded in these follow-up tests, it is then safe to practice sex again.

Directions

Before using the home test, follow all the instructions carefully. Failure to do so may affect the reliability of the test.

  1. This test is only for single-use.
  2. Make sure that you have a clock, alarm clock or stopwatch for the test so that you can keep track of the time.
  3. The kit should be stored at 2-30°C and not exceed the expiry date on the sealed pouch.
  4. Keep the test cassette in the sealed pouch prior to use.
  5. The kit is not for internal use. Avoid contact between hands and eyes or nose when carrying out the test.
  6. Do not eat, drink or smoke within close proximity of the test.
  7. Do not use the test if it has passed its expiry date (shown on the package) or if the packaging has been damaged or opened.
  8. If you are conducting the test now, open all of the packaging. Put all of the test materials on a clean, flat surface.
  9. Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and warm water. Rinse and dry them with a clean towel.
  10. Ensure that your hands are warm by rubbing them. Your finger should not feel cold and must be callous-free.
  11. Use the alcohol pad provided on your finger for further cleanliness.
  12. Take the needle and remove the protective cap.
  13. Put the hand from which you are drawing blood flat on the table, with your palm facing up.
  14. If you are left-handed, prick your middle or ring finger (on the side of the tip of your finger and on the side closest to your little finger) on your left hand.
  15. If you are right-handed, follow the above procedure on your right hand.
  16. To prick the finger, put the needle to your finger and push it. (Do not experiment with pushing the needle prior to placing it at the finger.)
  17. Wipe away the first drop of blood with a tissue.
  18. Allow your arm to hang down for 10 seconds. This will help to increase blood flow.
  19. Collect two drops of blood using the micro pipette and place them into the sample well.
  20. Take off the cap of the buffer and put approximately two drops of diluting agent into the sample well (S) slowly. Make sure the liquid comes into contact with the control line.
  21. Remove any excess blood on your finger with a tissue or paper towel and put a plaster on if required.
  22. If any symptoms remain, whatever the outcome of the test, we advise you to contact your GP.

Q&A

How does it work?

The test mixes blood with a diluting agent, which can detect antibodies to TP, or Treponema Pallidum (the bacteria that causes syphilis).

Does it need to go to a lab?

No. The cassette provided will show the result.

How long does it take?

The test should take approximately five minutes to perform, and 10-15 minutes to produce an outcome.

What type of sample do I need to provide for the syphilis test?

A blood sample (two drops). This can be taken from the tip of the finger and shouldn’t hurt.

What happens if I’m negative?

A second test, to confirm you aren’t infected, is recommended.

What happens if I’m positive?

You should go to your nearest GUM clinic or seek advice from your GP as soon as you can.

How accurate is the syphilis test kit?

The test kit is very accurate. Very occasionally (less than 0.05% of the time) it can give a positive result for someone who has never had syphilis and even more rarely (almost never) it can tell someone who has had syphilis that they haven’t had it.

Is syphilis curable?

A course of antibiotics typically cures syphilis.

Can you get syphilis twice?

Yes. You can contract it more than once, in spite of having been treated for it previously.

When it it safe to have sex again?

After syphilis has been treated, your doctor should recommend subsequent blood tests to ensure no traces of the infection remains in the body. Once a safe reading for syphilis has been found, it is then safe to resume sexual activity.

Who should get tested?

If you have had unprotected sex with someone whose STI status you do not know, it is a good idea to get tested; not just for syphilis but for all STIs. If you’re sexually active with more than one person, it’s best to get tested routinely around once a year.

If a recent partner has informed you they have syphilis, or if you have developed symptoms that you think could be indicative of the infection, you should get tested right away.
