What is the test to travel certificate?

The developing COVID-19 situation means that certain travel operators, and potentially countries, may ask for proof of coronavirus status prior to travel. Until a vaccine or cure is found, policies such as these could remain in place indefinitely.

A ‘fit to fly’ certificate helps airline operators reduce the chances of transmission from one country to another.

Due to high demand, this test is only available to people who are travelling for work purposes, or are displaying symptoms of coronavirus (such as a cough and a fever).

Can I get the test online?

You can order a sample collection kit online, which you must return to our UK laboratory. There is more information about when to do this on the instructions you’ll receive with your kit. Proceed to our short questionnaire to order your collection kit online.

Once our partner lab receives your sample, they will screen for current infection. Please note this is not an antibody test. This is a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) swab sample test.

When should I return my sample and when do I get a result?

You can order this test any time leading up to your flight. However, you should only take and return a sample based on the individual policies implemented by the travel operator you use in relation to fit to fly certificates. Please see their website for this information.

Sample collection kits are delivered the next working day if you order before 4pm Monday to Thursday. Our partner lab typically screens and provides results within 2-3 days. You’ll be alerted via email or SMS (if you have opted in to receive text messages) that your results are ready to be viewed in your patient area. Login to our site to read your lab report. If you test negatively, you’ll receive a PDF ‘fit to fly’ certificate.

What you need to know about online coronavirus testing

This is not a home test. It’s a sample collection kit, which must be returned in a prepaid, addressed envelope to a UK laboratory.

This is also not an ‘immunity test’. Tests such as these screen to see if you have SARS-CoV-19 antibodies in the blood, which shows prior infection. If this happened in relation to a different viral infection, it could be indicative of immunity. However, COVID-19 is a new and emerging virus and the extent, and potential duration, of immunity is still unknown.

This is a PCR swab test. A negative result only means you did not have coronavirus when you took the sample, so it is still possible to become infected after this. For this reason, we highly recommend adhering to the advice on social distancing provided by the government.

Directions

Make sure that you read the instructions provided in the leaflet and follow them carefully.

  • Please complete the pre-populated pathology request form.
  • Using a ballpoint pen, fill in the swab collection tube label, putting your first name, surname, your date of birth and the date of sample collection.
  • If you are returning your sample using Royal Mail post, make a note of the unique tracking number displayed under the barcode on the postal tracking label. Keep this in  a safe place for future reference. You can track delivery of your Royal Mail parcel be entering this number using the following link: http://www.royalmail.com/track-your-item
  • Peel off the postal tracking label and carefully apply it to the postal envelope.
  • Wash your hands.
  • Stick the completed swab collection tube label to the swab before collecting your sample.
  • Twist the cap of the swab tube and pull the swab out.
  • Make sure the swab makes good contact with the 5 key areas of the mouth: the tonsil, the posterior wall, the uvula, the posterior wall, and the tonsil (see the leaflet attached for a diagram of this).
  • Using the same swab, insert it 2-3cm horizontally into one nostril
  • Rotate the swab 5 times and then leave it in position for 5-10 seconds to absorb any material that is present.
  • Put the swab back into the tube and firmly close the cap.
  • Place your sample in the clear plastic specimen bag and seal it tightly.

Before you return your sample, please make sure that you do the following:

  • Place your completed request form supplied by your doctor/clinic into the postal envelope.
  • Make sure the swab sample is inside the clear specimen bag and the bag has been sealed tightly.
  • The specimen bag has been placed into the test kit box.
  • Close the test kit box firmly and place it into the postal envelope.
  • If returning your sample by post, please make sure the postal tracking label has been attached to the front of the postal envelope and that you have taken note of your postal tracking number.

It is better to collect your sample and return it promptly. Ideally, no longer than 48 hours should pass between swab collection and laboratory screening. For that reason, we highly recommend posting this collection sample on a working day of the week, preferably Monday to Thursday.

Please note that your sample must be posted in a Royal Mail priority post box in the UK. This is so that your sample can be handled with care and will arrive at the laboratory as a priority.

You can find out where the nearest priority post box to you is by first selecting ‘Show my nearest priority postboxes’ and then inputting your postcode here.

Please do not use any other Royal Mail post box as your sample may not reach the laboratory in time to process.

Once our partner lab receives your sample, they’ll screen and typically provide results within 2-3 days.

You’ll be notified by email or text when a result has been returned. Login to your patient area on our website, and here you will be able to download your lab report (if you test negatively for COVID-19) which you can show to travel or flight operators to demonstrate that you recently tested negative.

However, different travel operators will have implemented unique policies in relation to fit to fly certificates. We highly recommend you contact your travel operator before ordering this test.

If you’re unsure of anything to do with this test, or have any questions that are not answered in the Q&A section, please contact our customer care team customercare@treated.com or 0207 043 0716.

Q&A

What should I do if I think I have coronavirus?

You should self-isolate and stay at home for at least 10 days. If your situation worsens, seek medical attention. For more detailed information on what to do if you think you have symptoms of COVID-19, see the NHS website

What sort of sample does this test require?

A swab sample only, taken from the throat and nostrils. This is not a blood sample test.

Does it need to go to a lab?

Yes. Your kit comes with a prepaid, addressed envelope. You must follow the instructions that come with the test, particularly those which reference how to collect a sample and when to return it to our pathology lab.

Where is the lab based?

We work with a testing laboratory located in the UK.

What kind of test is this?

It’s a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) swab sample test.

Is this test reliable?

Yes, assuming the instructions are followed perfectly when you receive your kit this test is over 99% effective.

What does this test show?

It shows whether you had COVID-19 at the time you took your sample. If you test positively for the coronavirus using this test, you must self-isolate and must not travel at all.

Does this test for immunity?

No. There is no immunity test for COVID-19 at present. Typically with viruses, a positive test for antibodies is indicative of immunity. However, because COVID-19 is such a new virus, it’s impossible to say to what extent, and for how long, people are immune (if at all).

How do I get my results?

You will receive an email, or a text message if you opted to receive SMS notifications. It will notify you that a result is ready to view in the patient area of our website. You’ll need to login to view this.

If you test positive, you will be contacted by a member of our medical team.

A negative test means you did not have COVID-19 at the time you took your sample.

Do I get a certificate to prove I don’t have coronavirus?

Yes, you will receive documentation that shows your result. You will be able to download this as a lab report from your patient area, and you can use this for travel purposes.

How long can I use my certificate for?

A negative test only means you did not have the coronavirus at the time you collected a sample. Individual airline operators will have unique policies on COVID-19 fit to fly certificates, and how long they remain valid for. We highly advise you check with your travel operator before taking this test.

Once you return your sample, we recommend adhering to the advice on social distancing provided by the authorities in your area. This will help you avoid picking up the virus after you collect your sample.

How long does it take before I get my results?

Our lab typically screens and provides results within 2-3 days of sample receipt. If you are travelling within the next five days, we cannot guarantee you will receive your results.

Do not order this testing collection kit if you intend to travel within three days.

Will it tell me if I’ve had COVID-19 before?

No, this is not an antibody test for SARS-CoV-19. This is a swab test which screens for current infection only.

Will the UK government be informed about my COVID-19 status?

Our partner lab reports testing statistics to the relevant authorities in relation to the coronavirus. We personally follow up on positive test results with local authorities.

Why is this test so expensive?

We appreciate that this is not an inexpensive test. Our prices are inclusive of shipping sample collection kits, laboratory testing and analysis, administrative processing, and clinical follow-ups where needed.

Patients who test negative will also receive a fit to fly certificate. This is included in the overall cost of the test.

How can I get the test to travel certificate online?

Order a sample collection kit, and we’ll ship the following day on all purchases placed before 4pm Monday to Thursday. Return your sample as soon as possible, and our UK lab will typically screen and provide results within 2-3 days.

All patients receive a unique lab report in PDF format.
