Product information

The HPV vaginal swab test checks for a number of HPV strains in women, even if you do not have any symptoms.

What is HPV?

The Human Papillomavirus, more commonly known as HPV, refers to a large family of viral strains that can be transmitted through sexual contact. It is a very common virus but not all strains cause symptoms.

Most people who have HPV will be asymptomatic but the virus can also cause genital warts or in some cases it can lead to cancer.

The majority of the HPV strains cannot be treated. However, cases of genital warts and cervical cancer do require treatment.

It is possible to lower your risk of contracting HPV by using condoms during sex but doing so will not offer full protection. This is because the virus can be spread through a number of means, not just penetrative sex.

How does the HPV test work?

The HPV test kit uses a swab to take a sample of cells from inside the vagina. You can collect the sample yourself at home.

This test should only be used by women.

Is the HPV test the same as a smear test?

No. The smear test checks for cell abnormalities in the cervix which can lead to cervical cancer. If you receive a negative result from your HPV test, it is still important to attend your regular smear tests.

Can I get the HPV vaccine?

In England the HPV vaccine is routinely offered to girls and boys in the Year 8 school group. It offers protection against four strains of HPV, two of which cause the majority of cervical cancers in the UK. It is possible to receive this vaccination up until turning 25 years old.

How can I order a HPV test online?
