Motion sickness is a condition characterised by feelings of nausea and dizziness during transit, and is thought to have the potential to affect anyone. It is generally more common among children, and women are seemingly more susceptible to the condition than men are.

It is a result of opposing information and signals being sent to the brain from the eyes, and the section of the inner ear which manages balance, called the vestibulo-cochlear system.

Simply put, when the eyes perceive one thing but the body physically senses something else, such as when travelling by car or boat, or going through turbulence in a plane, this results in feelings of sickness.

Treatment is available in a range of forms. Some people find that self-help techniques can avert symptoms, and these may include fixing your visual focus on a distant fixed point, or listening to music.

But for others, these techniques may not be effective and treatment may be required.

Examples of treatment for motion sickness are Kwells and Scopoderm, which both contain an agent called hyoscine hydrobromide. This medicine stops the transmission of signals from the inner ear to the area postrema in the brain, which is responsible for causing symptoms.

Another form of treatment for sea, car and air sickness is Cyclizine, which contains a different active ingredient to the two products described above, but also helps to prevent feelings of nausea. The antihistamine agent in this product works by blocking signals from reaching the vomiting centre in the brain and triggering feelings of sickness.

Types of Treatment

Types of Treatment

Certain techniques can help people with the condition, whether it is car sickness, sea sickness or otherwise, to reduce the likelihood or severity of symptoms. For instance fixing your gaze on the horizon might be an approach which can help. This may not be possible for persons experiencing air or plane sickness, but in this case, listening to music can sometimes provide an adequate enough distraction.

However, in some cases, medicinal treatment may be required, and this is available in the form of Kwells and Scopoderm, which are both hyoscine-based products. Cyclizine is another form of treatment sometimes used to help prevent nausea.

How do they work?

It is thought that motion sickness occurs when the brain receives conflicting information from the senses. This leads to feelings of nausea, and dizziness.

Hyoscine works by limiting the transmission of signals from the section of the inner ear which controls balance, helping to reduce uneasiness.

Cyclizine interferes with the processing of signals which trigger the vomiting centre in the brain. This helps to reduce feelings of nausea.

What are the side effects?

Keeping an awareness of side effects is vital when using any medicine. Kwells and Scopoderm contain the same active constituent but are different products, and may cause varying side effects. These include dry mouth, sleepiness and blurred vision.

Can I take them with other medications?

During consultation, you should let your prescriber know if you are using any prescription, non-prescription or remedial treatments, as these may affect your suitability for these medications.

Question and Answers

What’s the difference between the medications?

The three products available from Treated.com for travel sickness contain slightly different active constituents. Kwells and Scopoderm both contain hyoscine hydrobromide, while the main agent in Cyclizine is an antihistamine. They do, however, work in similar ways, by interfering with the transmission of signals sent to the vomiting centre in the brain.

Should I take Kwells, Scopoderm or Cyclizine?

It really depends on what you’ve used before, and your medical condition. The presence of some health factors may mean that one or more of these medicines is not safe for you to use. Consult the relevant areas for each product to find out more.

Are there different side effects?

Yes. You should familiarise yourself with the possible side effects before using your treatment, so that you can seek medical advice if necessary. Common side effects across Kwells and Scopoderm include headache, dizziness and flushing. Refer to the relevant page for each product for more information.
