Travel sickness is a condition which is thought to be able to affect anyone. Common symptoms include nausea, vomiting and dizziness. It occurs in situations where the brain receives sensory information which essentially does not match, and disorientates it. For instance, if the eyes perceive that the immediate surroundings are stationary, while the balance centres in the inner ear feel definite movement, this sends conflicting signals to the brain and causes the above symptoms to manifest.
In the inner ear, the section responsible for measuring and maintaining balance is called the vestibular system, and it is from here that messages are relayed to the part of the brain called the area postrema, also known as the vomiting centre. When these signals become jumbled up, as a result of being on a moving road vehicle, plane or boat, receptors in the brain respond by telling the body to vomit.
Treatment for travel sickness, also referred to as motion sickness, works by interfering in this neural communication process. Scopoderm patches contain an active component called hyoscine hydrobromide, which treats travel sickness by inhibiting the function of muscarinic receptors in the brain, thereby preventing it from interpreting confusing signals. This then decreases the severity of symptoms.
