Avamys is a nasal spray used to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis. It is administered once a day, and usually provides noticeable results within eight hours to a day. The spray contains a corticosteroid which helps to reduce the inflammatory effects of an allergic response. This might be to pollen (hay fever), dust mites, mold spores or animal hair. GlaxoSmithKline makes Avamys nasal spray, which is only available with a prescription.

Rhinitis can take on a number of forms. It might be the result of hay fever, or an allergy to dust or mold. More common symptoms resemble those experienced during a cold, such as nasal congestion, a runny nose, coughing and sneezing, and general feelings of irritation in the airways. The condition is very common, particularly in the UK, with roughly 20 per cent of the population thought to be affected to some extent.
It occurs when the tissues in the nose and airways come into contact with an irritating stimulus, such as those described above, through inhalation. The body’s immune system interprets these irritants as a threat, and duly releases chemicals as a defensive measure. These chemicals cause swelling and inflammation, resulting in the symptoms of an allergic nasal response. Irritation may also occur beneath and around the eyes, causing itching and wateriness.
In Avamys, the active ingredient is a type of corticosteroid called fluticasone. During a rhinitic episode, the chemicals responsible for causing inflammation are released by certain cells in tissue. It is these cells which fluticasone inhibits the function of, so as to curb the release of resistant chemicals. Symptoms of irritation are then calmed and the airways begin to clear.

How to use Avamys
Read the instructions provided in the patient information leaflet carefully before using this item, and follow the directions given to you by your doctor. This will allow the medicine to work at its best, and make the risk of side effects less likely.
- Administer as directed.
- This will in most cases be two sprays per nostril, once a day.
- Use it at the same time each day.
- When your symptoms are under control, your doctor may advise you to use just one spray per nostril.
- Shake well before use, for at least 10 seconds.
- Remove the cap, and point the nozzle away from you.
- Before using the spray for the first time, or if you have not used the spray for more than 30 days, you will need to prime the spray. Pump the button around 6 six times until a mist is produced. This primes the spray.
- Blow your nose to remove any obstruction.
- Tilt your head forwards slightly.
- Place the nozzle inside one nostril, pointing it slightly out so that it is directed away from the centre of your nose.
- Press the button all the way in and at the same time inhale through the nose.
- Remove the nozzle and breathe out through the mouth.
- If you are applying more than one spray, repeat as appropriate.
- Use a dry tissue to wipe the nozzle clean.
- Do not take more than the amount specified by your prescriber.
- Never make up for a missed dose by doubling up on your next one. Take it when you remember if you can, but if your next dose is due, wait until then and skip the one you have missed.
Please note that the above is only a guide, and that you will need to refer to the more detailed instructions in the leaflet supplied prior to use.
