Nasonex is a nasal spray designed to help relieve the symptoms caused by allergic rhinitis. Made by pharmacy brand MSD it uses the active ingredient mometasone furoate, to control the inflammatory response triggered inside the nose when an allergen is present. The medication is from the corticosteroid group and is usually administered for several days before coming into contact with an allergen.

One in five people in the UK are thought to have allergic rhinitis. It is not known exactly why some people develop an over sensitive immune system. It can affect anyone, although it can run in families. The most common allergens for this condition include pollen, dust mites and animal dander. The airborne spores are breathed in through the nose where the body’s immune system interprets them as a threat. In order to protect itself it produces extra antibodies to try and kill off the allergens. The lining of the nose releases chemicals usually released when fighting an infection such as a cold. This leads to unwanted symptoms; such as a runny or itchy nose, blocked nasal passages and sneezing.
The condition can be frustrating to live with on a daily basis. It is possible to reduce symptoms by avoiding coming into contact with the allergen where possible and also regularly performing nasal cleaning. The majority of people diagnosed with allergic rhinitis do not go on to have serious problems. However, there is a heightened risk of developing sinusitis, nasal polyps and middle ear infections.
There is no cure for allergic rhinitis but it can be effectively managed with corticosteroid treatment, such as Nasonex. This product helps reduce symptoms by stopping the cells in the nose from releasing the chemicals produced in an allergic reaction. The active ingredient mometasone furoate prevents the nasal inflammation reaction therefore the unwanted symptoms are avoided.
