Salbutamol is used to provide relief from asthma symptoms, and is available as an Easyhaler, or as a tablet. It contains the same active ingredient, salbutamol, and performs the same function.

Asthma is a condition familiar to many people in the UK, with around 5.5 million people thought to be receiving treatment for the illness. It is characterised by symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath, which may occur in response to a trigger. These are commonly irritants, such as dust, chemical residue, smoke, or allergens such as pollen. Cold air can also bring about symptoms, as can emotional stress, or even exercise.

It is not completely understood why asthma occurs in some but not in others. As it is the result of an immune response, experts tend to point to a person’s environment during their developing years as a significant factor; exposure to an irritant, or lack thereof, may cause the immune system to develop a heightened sensitivity, and react drastically when it comes into contact with certain elements.

This immune response induces symptoms by causing inflammation in the tiny tubes which connect the lungs to the windpipe. These are known as bronchi, and regulate the passage of air in our breathing. Inflammation in these tubes causes muscle walls around them to tense up, and this makes them narrower, restricting air flow. In some cases, these airways are further obstructed by excess phlegm which inflammation can lead to. Breathing difficulties then result.

As a beta-2 agonist, salbutamol works by stimulating certain receptors in the body, and this helps to calm these contracted muscle walls. This helps the affected respiratory passages to dilate, and eases breathing. In addition to medicating active symptoms, Salbutamol can also work as a preventative treatment when applied before exposure to an irritant.

Salbutamol is not available to purchase through our online service. See your GP in person to be prescribed this item.
