Conjunctivitis is a condition which can be caused by a number of factors. It might occur due to an allergic reaction to pollen or dust mites, due to irritation by soap or other cosmetic products, or be the result of a bacterial infection. In cases of the latter, the infection is caused when harmful bacteria is transferred to the eye, causing a range of symptoms.

These may include redness, wateriness, the production of a yellow discharge, or a slight burning sensation. In more severe cases, where there is particularly intense redness present in the eye, sight problems, pain or sensitivity to light, then emergency medical attention should be sought.

Symptoms occur when the blood vessels in the conjunctiva, which is a thin layer of cells that covers the eye, become inflamed and widen. This causes the body to react by producing mucus, which manifests in the form of the above-mentioned yellow discharge. Persons who are susceptible to conjunctivitis include those who have diabetes, are taking immunosuppressant medication such as corticosteroids, or have recently had an infection of the airways or a cold.

One of the most efficient ways of treating bacterial conjunctivitis in most cases is with antibiotic medication. Minims Chloramphenicol is one such option, and is issued in the form of an eye drop. It contains the functioning agent chloramphenicol, which works by attacking the bacteria’s ability to multiply itself and spread. This weakens the infection enough for the immune system to fight off what remains, and symptoms then begin to dissipate.

Please note that Minims is not available to buy from our online pharmacy. Get an appointment with your GP if you think you may have conjunctivitis, or an eye infection. Your doctor will be able to determine the cause of symptoms, and help you get the treatment you require.

  1. Administer as directed.
  2. For adult cases of conjunctivitis, this will typically be one or two drops up to six times per day.
  3. In severe cases, this may be increased if your doctor feels it necessary.
  4. Prior to use, wash your hands.
  5. Stand or sit in front of a mirror.
  6. Carefully dab away any excess moisture around the eyes, before removing the lid on the treatment.
  7. Then gently pull down the lower lid of your eye, and without letting the dropper touch, apply the desired number of drops to the inside of the eyelid.
  8. Blink several times to distribute the medicine evenly.
  9. Shut your eyes and gently apply a touch of pressure to the inner corner of your eyelid for around three minutes, to prevent the solution from draining into the nose and throat.
  10. If required, do the same for the other eye.
  11. You should start to notice an improvement very quickly. If you do not after a few days of continuous use, go back to your doctor for further help.
  12. Do not take more than the amount prescribed.
  13. If you miss a dose, you can take it when you remember provided your next dose is not due. If it is, skip the one you have missed and continue to take the treatment as normal.
