Constipation is a condition which can have any number of causes, and is characterised by a severely reduced bowel frequency. It is common for stools to be dry and hard, due to the increased water absorption caused by their lingering presence in the gut. Feelings of bloatedness may also be present, as might stomach pain. Poor dietary habits, such as not eating enough fibre or eating infrequently, and a lack of fluid intake can sometimes cause constipation symptoms.
In IBS, someone may flit between bouts of constipation and diarrhoea. This condition is, in simple terms, an increased susceptibility to bowel problems, which can cause difficulties digesting food. Someone with IBS, or irritable bowel syndrome, may find that they experience symptoms after eating a certain type of food, causing them to either process food too quickly, or too slowly. It is in the latter case where constipation may develop.
Prevention of constipation and non-medicinal treatment depends on the cause. Milder cases may be resolved by increasing fibre intake, or increasing the amount of fluid you drink if you aren’t getting enough. In the case of IBS, it may be necessary to identify those specific foods which trigger symptoms, and limit or even stop their consumption.
Treatment for IBS-related cases of constipation may be necessary where symptoms persist. Fybogel Mebeverine is a combination medication, which contains two active constituents; ispaghula husk and mebeverine hydrochloride. The first of these is a fibre, which works as a laxative to provide bulk to the food present in the gut. In doing so, it encourages the muscles in the bowel to react by pushing the food out, increasing stool frequency. Mebeverine is a type of drug called an antispasmodic, and relieves digestive pain by helping the muscles in the gut to relax.
