  1. Helps to ease bowel movements
  2. Effective in alleviating faecal impaction
  3. Simple to take

Constipation is a condition which is defined by an inability to pass stools at a comfortable frequency. It may cause you to strain on the toilet, and cause discomfort. Stools may also be abnormally large or small during periods of constipation. They may also become dry and hard because, after spending so much time in the bowel, excess water is absorbed from them. This may cause pain in the rectum upon passing them, and cause haemorrhoids. It is important to remember that if you notice any blood when going to the toilet, then you should contact your doctor as soon as possible.

It can be difficult to determine the presence of the condition, because everyone’s bowel habits are different; but it is said to be present if bowel movements are occurring at a much diminished frequency than is usual. There are a number of reasons why constipation may develop. Not drinking enough fluids and having too little fibre in your diet are often pointed to as common offenders. Having irregular eating habits can also slow down the rate at which you pass stools. Constipation might also be a side effect of some medications.

Left untreated, the condition can lead to faecal impaction, where stool begins to collect in the rectal area. This can cause blockages in the anal pathways, and further compound constipation symptoms. Faecal impaction is more likely to occur in those cases where constipation is chronic.

Certain prevention methods can be employed to help relieve milder cases of constipation, in the form of lifestyle adjustments. These include: eating more fibre; drinking more fluids; or introducing a programme of light exercise. In those cases where symptoms are being caused by medication, your doctor may be able to resolve the issue by prescribing an alternative treatment.

The main acting constituent in Movicol is a substance called macrogol, but the treatment also contains sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride and potassium chloride. Macrogol is not taken up through the gut as it passes through, and it hydrates stools by carrying the water it is mixed with into the bowel. By softening stools, it makes them easier to expel and relieves constipation. The purpose of the other ingredients in this laxative is to prevent the body from losing too much sodium or potassium.

It doesn’t need to be time-consuming getting the prescription medication you need. Take our five-minute questionnaire today, and one of our doctors will review the responses you give. Once confirmed as suitable, a prescription will be generated for your treatment and sent to our dispensing pharmacy. How to use Movicol

Take care to follow the instructions provided by your doctor when using this medication, and to adhere to those outlined in the patient information leaflet. Doing so will help you to limit the risk of side effects and optimise the efficacy of the medicine.

  1. Use as prescribed.
  2. For constipation, this will be one sachet taken one to three times per day, depending on the severity of symptoms.
  3. Instances of faecal impaction may require up to eight sachets a day, however you should have a confirmed diagnosis of this condition before embarking on treatment.
  4. Those with a heart condition should not take two sachets within a one-hour period.
  5. Duration of treatment may vary. Your doctor may suggest taking the treatment for around two weeks in cases of constipation. Intense courses for faecal impaction will usually only be required for up to three days.
  6. Prepare the solution by mixing one sachet with 125ml, or one quarter of a pint, of water. Stir until completely dissolved.
  7. Never exceed the prescribed dose.
  8. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember.

The above is supplied only as a guide. Further detailed instructions can be found in the leaflet supplied with the product.
