Losec is a capsule treatment indicated for heartburn, made by AstraZeneca. It works by inhibiting the production of gastric acids in the stomach. This function makes it adept at tackling occasionally related digestive issues, such as duodenal and stomach ulcers, and acid regurgitation.
- Branded AstraZeneca Product
- Sold as capsules or easy to take pellets
- Effective medicine for heartburn
The treatment is available to buy from our UK pharmacy as a standard capsule, and as a Losec MUPS tablet. An abbreviation for Multiple Unit Pellet System, this version is a capsule containing small pellets. Those who prefer not to swallow whole capsules or for whom this is difficult, these special tablets can be opened, and the contents can either be taken directly with water, or dissolved in liquid and swallowed.
Heartburn is characterised by pain, or the feeling of burning in the chest. It is a common symptom of a condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease, which can also cause discomfort when swallowing; and the bringing up of acid into the mouth, signified by an unpleasant taste.
There are a few reasons why someone might get heartburn, and most people throughout their lives will experience it at least once. It is more likely to occur when the stomach is too full (for instance after consuming a very large meal) or if a person is overweight. Pregnant women are also more susceptible to it.
At the base of the oesophagus where it connects to the stomach are a series of muscles. These form something called the oesophageal sphincter, and act as a doorway to the stomach; opening to let food in; and closing again to stop acids from getting out. Heartburn occurs when pressure is placed on these muscles, and they are unable to contract afterwards, leading to the upwards leaking of acids into the oesophagus. This then causes the aforementioned feelings of pain, and in more severe cases, inflammation and damage.
(In some cases, burning pain in the chest may be a symptom of a heart condition. If you are having chest pain for the first time, or if you are experiencing pain which is more serious than usual, you should go to your doctor right away to have your heart function checked.)
The functioning constituent in Losec is a proton pump inhibitor called omeprazole. Proton pumps are located within the cells of the stomach lining, and they generate acid to help digest the food we eat. Omeprazole works by lowering the amount of acid these pumps produce, and thereby decreasing the symptoms of GORD, including heartburn.
These tablets may also be issued in combination with antibiotics to treat an illness called helicobacter pylori, which is an infection with the potential to cause ulcers.

- A typical course lasts for 4-8 weeks.

- The MUPS tablet version can be carefully opened, and the interior pellets can be swallowed, or dispersed in liquid before being consumed. See the leaflet supplied for further directions.
