Vaniqa is a dermally-applied cream medication for hirsutism, which is the name given to excess hair growth in women. The treatment is applied to the face and works by reducing the rate of hair growth, by interfering with the action of an enzyme in the body. It is designed to be administered to the facial area affected twice a day, and will generally produce noticeable results after around two months of continued use.
- Applied to slow growth of facial hair
- Noticeable results in weeks
- Alternative to hormonal medicine
Hirsutism is a condition which many women experience at some point in their lives. According to estimates, it is thought to affect around one to three out of every 20 women between the ages of 18 and 50 in the UK; and many of those will agree that it can be uncomfortable, as well as a challenge to have to manage on a regular basis.
The condition is characterised by unusual hair growth in places such as the upper lip and chin. Sometimes, this excess hair can appear on the front of the thighs, or the stomach and chest; and may be accompanied by acne. Although hirsutism itself is not a serious condition, it can be distressing for someone to endure, and have a detrimental impact on a person’s sense of confidence.
Imbalanced hormone levels are the primary cause of this condition; specifically a high presence of male hormones, also known as androgens. Sometimes, this might be caused by an underlying condition, called polycystic ovarian syndrome (or PCOS), where small cysts develop around the ovaries and affect the way they work. Treatment for PCOS may involve hormonal supplementation through the combined pill, or other measures.
Otherwise, the condition may simply be a result of hypersensitivity to male hormones which are at normal levels in the body.
Vaniqa Almirall is a cream for excess facial hair, which contains an active ingredient called eflornithine. This counteracts the function of an enzyme called ornithine decarboxylase. This enzyme is found inside hair follicles, and is a necessary component in the growth of hair. Vaniqa prevents this enzyme from working properly, and this helps to reduce the rate at which excess hair grows; thereby helping the user to go about their day without having to worry about the presence of excess hair.
