Livial is a special type of hormone replacement therapy, and is marketed for purchase in the UK by the company Merck Sharp and Dohme. It is effective in relieving common symptoms associated with the menopause, and is also adept at preventing the onset of osteoporosis. This product works differently to other HRT tablets, as it contains a single agent called tibolone which, when dissected by the body, releases three types of hormone. These work in a similar way to oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone.

The menopause is a natural part of getting older, and is something which every woman goes through at some point in their lives. It most commonly occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, although it can happen earlier in some cases. It is where the body stops undertaking certain processes in preparation for pregnancy, such as ovulation, and menstruation. As a result, the production of an egg by the ovaries, and periodic bleeding, will both at first begin to slow down, before eventually ceasing completely.
When the body embarks on this change, however, certain symptoms can also come about in response to a drop in hormone production. These may include an increase in the instance of headaches, hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings, insomnia, and vaginal dryness. Postmenopause, bones can also become weak and brittle, and more prone to osteoporosis.
Whereas many women going through the menopause will experience these effects to a certain extent, most cases will be mild enough not to warrant treatment. But, those who find that these symptoms are affecting them more than they would like may be able to find relief via hormone replacement therapy.
There are several different types of HRT. Some only contain oestrogen, and these are indicated for use in cases where the user has had their uterus surgically removed. The synthetic version of oestrogen supplied augments natural levels in the body, and reduces symptoms caused by the deficiency of this hormone. Combined HRT, which also contains progesterone, is provided when a person has not had surgery on the womb. This is because oestrogen, when left unopposed, can sometimes rise to excessive levels, and cause the endometrial lining to build up so much that it poses a risk of cancer. Progesterone helps to maintain hormonal equilibrium, and prevent oestrogen levels from reaching potentially unsafe heights.
Livial is a tablet which provides a continuous form of combined HRT, which should only be used once the prospective user has gone for at least 12 months without having a menstrual bleed. It contains an active constituent called tibolone, which disperses into three hormones in the body: oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone. The first two of these hormones serve the purposes described above. However, testosterone is less commonly found in pills of this type.
This is because the reduction of testosterone in the body which occurs during the menopause can also lead to certain symptoms, such as loss of libido and mood swings. Testosterone is also supplied in this treatment to further limit these effects.
