Elocon is a topical treatment for psoriasis and other skin conditions. It contains a drug called mometasone furoate, which is a type of corticosteroid. This works by reducing the effect of inflammatory chemicals released by the immune system during a psoriasis flare up. Elocon is marketed by Merck Sharp and Dohme and is available to buy in the UK as a scalp lotion, an ointment or a cream.

Psoriasis is thought to affect roughly two out of every 100 people in the UK, and is a chronic illness. Typical symptoms include skin irritation, which may manifest in the form redness, itching, flaking and the appearance of scaly tissue in the affected region. The most commonly affected areas are the scalp, the elbows and knees, and the lower back.
The condition goes through periods of activity and remission. Flare-ups are usually set in motion by certain triggers, such as smoking, drinking too much alcohol, stress, reaction to specific types of medication, and sometimes as a response to irritants in shampoos or cosmetic products.
It is not yet completely understood why the condition occurs, but it is thought to stem from the over-activity of the immune system, or autoimmunity. This is when the body’s defences perceive a threat from an infection, although none may be present. Consequently, the immune system will cause certain defensive substances to be released in the body, which can cause inflammation. In psoriasis, this also involves the development of new skin cells at a faster than usual rate. Irritation and excess skin cell production results, causing the symptoms of psoriasis.
When treating psoriasis, a doctor may discuss the potential triggers with the patient, and provide advice on how to avoid these and lower the severity of symptoms. They may also prescribe a topical corticosteroid, such as mometasone furoate, in order to reduce inflammation. This works by preventing the release of chemicals the immune system releases during a flare-up, which can exacerbate irritation, thereby allowing the affected area to heal.
