Eumovate is a very potent steroid-based cream used to medicate a variety of skin conditions, including psoriasis. It is administered to the region affected twice a day, usually for a period of no longer than four weeks. The active ingredient in this cream is a steroid, which helps to reduce inflammation in the area to which it is applied.
- Corticosteroid cream
- Effective at reducing inflammation
- Used for a range of conditions
Psoriasis is a condition characterised by a number of symptoms. These include redness, irritation and often itching in patches on the skin. Sometimes, a flaky, scale-like pattern will develop too, and breaks may appear. In rarer cases, an infection may develop and cause pustules to appear as well.
The condition is a chronic one, and will typically go through periods of activity and dormancy. Several triggers may incur a flare-up, and these will tend to vary depending on the individual, but commonly, these may include stress, smoking or the consumption of alcohol, a reaction to medication, or a change in hormone levels.
In most people, the condition will manifest before the age of 35. Currently, it isn't fully understood why some people have the condition and others do not, but it is thought to be the result of the immune system attacking healthy skin cells, and encouraging new ones to develop before they are needed. These cells then make their way to the surface of skin, causing the above symptoms to occur.
Clobetasone butyrate is a type of corticosteroid which helps to prevent this process. In stopping the release of inflammatory chemicals by the immune system, it helps to prevent the widening of blood vessels, thereby soothing irritation and itchiness, as well as easing other symptoms too.
