Finacea is a gel made by Bayer, which is used to relieve symptoms of acne rosacea. It applied twice a day to the affected skin on the face. Usually, the benefits of the gel are noticeable after around 4 weeks, and symptoms begin to clear up. Marketed in the UK by Intendis, Finacea is only available to buy on prescription. This is so that a doctor can assess your suitability for the product prior to issue.

Rosacea is a condition which usually affects the skin on the face. For most, it is a persistent ailment which goes through periods of activity and remission. Symptoms of rosacea include: flushing, or redness; blood vessels showing through the skin; and thickening of the skin. Small red bumps and spots, called papules may appear, as may pus-filled versions of these, or pustules. Problems may also occur in the eye, such as being bloodshot, dryness and feelings of obstruction.
It is thought that the condition is fairly common, affecting around 10 per cent of people on the UK. However, despite having such a high rate of incidence, knowledge of rosacea is fairly limited. The cause is not known, but many people point to the activity of peptides, which are small molecules in the skin. When stimulated by certain factors, peptides are thought to interact with the immune cells in the skin, thus triggering an inflammatory reaction.
Microscopic mites are also a possible cause. These mites, known as demodex folliculorum, provide a harmless presence on the skin normally. However, when their population grows, the levels of bacteria they produce also grows, and this is thought by some to be a factor in causing rosacea symptoms. Irregular blood vessel function has also been identified as a contributing factor.
While a definitive cause has not yet been found, people with rosacea find that certain triggers can induce a flare-up. Triggers most commonly cited include stress, alcohol, caffeine, dairy, physical exertion, prolonged or intense exposure to UV light, and hot or cold weather conditions. Some avoidance strategies can help to limit the likelihood of symptoms, but in some cases, prescription treatment may be necessary to help clear the condition up.
This is available in the form of Finacea. Containing azelaic acid, this gel has shown to be effective within 4-8 weeks in controlling symptoms. As rosacea and its causes are not yet fully understood, how the gel works to relieve the condition is not yet completely known either. However, the gel is known to reduce the levels of acne-inducing bacteria on the skin by interfering with their growth processes, thereby limiting the presence of pustules. It also has anti-inflammatory effects on redness and swelling.
