Product information

Doxycycline is an antibiotic tablet, known as a tetracycline. This medication has a versatile range of uses, and is a generic version of the treatment otherwise sold as Vibramycin-D by Pfizer. It treats bacterial infections such as chlamydia. It is also sometimes used in malaria prophylaxis for those travelling to certain regions.

(Please note that we only offer this as a chlamydia treatment for people who have a positive test result.)

Doxycycline for chlamydia

Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the UK, with around 200,000 reported instances per year. It can be spread through vaginal, anal or oral sex, or through the use of shared sex toys.

In many cases (around half of those occurring in males and 80 percent of those in females) the infection is symptomless, so it is possible to have chlamydia and not know. Where it does cause symptoms, these may include: vaginal discharge or irregular bleeding in women; or testicular pain or discharge from the penis in men.

Even where chlamydia is symptomless, when left untreated it can lead to complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease in women, or infertility in both sexes; so it is important to get tested regularly if you’re sexually active, or get tested as soon as possible if you think you might have come into contact with the infection.

Currently, the preferred treatment for chlamydia is Doxycycline only. Formerly, Azithromycin was also a first line treatment. However, due to increasing levels of antibiotic resistance, azithromycin is now a second line treatment.

Patients who have tested positive for chlamydia can order treatment online through our site. In cases where Doxycycline is unsuitable (if you are allergic to certain ingredients, for example) we generally recommend Azithromycin in the second instance. There is another second-line treatment, called Erythromycin, but this is not presently available through our online service.

To request a prescription for this medication and buy Doxycycline online, click ‘buy now’ to start your consultation. Your answers will be reviewed by our doctor, who will issue a prescription for your treatment following approval. This will then dispensed at our UK pharmacy and shipped to you by next-day courier.

If you haven’t been tested for chlamydia, but think you may come into contact with it, you should get tested as soon as possible. You can either do this by ordering one of our test kits online, or by visiting your GP or local sexual health clinic.

If your sexual partner has received a positive chlamydia result, but you have not been tested yet, you may be advised to take the test, then take the treatment right away. We offer a combined treatment and test kit pack for this purpose.

We also offer a treatment and test kit bundle pack for people:

  • who have tested positive for chlamydia and want to order a ‘test of cure’ to be used two weeks after treatment (to check the infection has gone); or:
  • who haven’t been tested yet, but have a partner who has tested positive for chlamydia. (In this case, you should make sure you do your test before taking treatment.)

Use in malaria

Doxycycline is also sometimes prescribed as an antimalarial. Malaria is a potentially very serious illness, caused by the plasmodium parasite. This is transmitted from mosquitoes to humans through bites.

Due to the existence of several strains in different regions around the world, there are a number of treatments available for malaria. The NHS Fit For Travel website provides country-specific guidance for travellers on malaria, and which drugs are most suitable as prevention treatment. Please note that this can vary from country to country; so you must check which drug is recommended for the area you are travelling to first.

People taking Doxycycline for malaria will take one 100mg tablet a day. They will need to start taking it one or two days before travel, and continue taking it for 28 days after they return. So, if you are ordering this treatment from our site, you should order the number of tablets equal to the number of days you are away, plus 30.

To help you, we’ve put together an ordering guide below. To allow for flight delays and unexpected cancellations, we also permit patients to order the next pack size up from the specific one they need.

Please adhere to the instructions supplied when administering this treatment, and follow the directions your doctor has provided. As well as helping to ensure that the medicine is effective, doing so will also limit the risk of side effects.

  • Take as prescribed.
  • For chlamydia, this is usually 100mg taken twice daily for one week (7 days).
  • For the prevention of malaria, this will be one 100mg tablet taken each day at the same time. You should start taking it 1-2 days before you travel, continue taking it throughout the time you are abroad, and for a further 28 days after you return. This means that if you are ordering this medicine for the prevention of malaria, you should order a number of tablets equal to the number of days you are away plus 30.
  • Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully when taking treatment.
  • Swallow tablets whole with water.
  • Do not exceed the prescribed amount.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this antibiotic.
  • If you forget to take it, do not compensate with a double dose. Take it when you remember then carry on as normal from the next dose, and contact your doctor for advice.

These directions are provided only as a guide. Ensure you read the patient information leaflet fully before using this medicine.

If you are ordering the combined treatment and test kit pack, it is important to collect your sample for the test first BEFORE starting the treatment.

You can read the user leaflet for the chlamydia test kit here.

Getting Doxycycline treatment for chlamydia online
