What is Mupirocin?
Mupirocin ointment is an antibiotic thatโs licensed to treat skin infections like impetigo, and prescribed off-label for angular cheilitis. Angular cheilitis is an infection caused by moisture getting trapped in the corners of your mouth, which provides perfect conditions for bacteria like Staphylococcus to grow.
How does Mupirocin work?
Mupirocin works by interfering with bacteriaโs production of essential proteins and RNA.[1] Without them, the bacteria canโt grow or spread, and your body is able to clear up the remaining infection.
How do Mupirocin doses work?
Mupirocin ointment is only available in one strength, which is 2% w/w. 2% w/w means that for every gram of treatment, 2% (0.02 g) is made up of its active ingredient.
What is the active ingredient in Mupirocin?
Mupirocin takes its name from its active ingredient, mupirocin calcium. Itโs a generic medicine, which means that while it contains the same active ingredient and works in the same way as its branded counterparts (like Bactroban and Centany), itโs usually available for cheaper.
