Bupropion SR (that’s ‘sustained release,’ if you were wondering) is a daily tablet that you take to help you quit smoking. Although it was originally developed and marketed as an antidepressant called Wellbutrin, it became apparent that when smokers took it it reduced their cigarette cravings and helped them to quit smoking. Because of this, the drug was then repurposed as a stop smoking treatment under its generic name. Though in some other countries, such as the UK, it’s known under a different name: Zyban.
And because it’s a nicotine-free treatment, you might find it ideal if you’ve tried nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs) before (such as Nicorette gums or patches) and they’ve not quite cut the mustard for you.
How does Bupropion SR work?
It isn’t fully understood how Bupropion SR works to help you quit, but it’s thought that it changes the dopamine levels in different parts of your brain.[1] As dopamine is responsible for feelings of reward and pleasure, by interfering with it bupropion can reduce the enjoyment you get from having a cigarette, making you less likely to want one.
You start taking it around 1-2 weeks before a chosen quit date, and your total treatment course will usually last around 12 weeks.
Bupropion SR can also help to lower the strength of your nicotine withdrawals, so you can feel less tired, irritable and frustrated than if you were trying to stop smoking cold turkey.
What doses of Bupropion SR are there?
Bupropion SR comes in just one strength: 150mg. For the first three days you’ll take just one tablet a day, followed by two a day for the remainder of your treatment course. If you don’t feel as though this daily dosage is doing enough to cut your cravings, speak with your doctor. Don’t take more than prescribed to try and make it more effective.

How to take Bupropion SR
Always take Bupropion SR exactly as instructed by your doctor.
To take it, simply swallow one tablet whole, with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food. Try to take your doses at the same time each day.
From days 1-3 you should take one tablet each day. From day three onwards take two per day – one in the morning and one in the evening. Make sure you leave at least eight hours gap between each dose.
How long does it take Bupropion SR to work?
You should start to feel your cigarette cravings reduce within a week of starting to take it, but it can take a while for your cravings to disappear completely. Most people who take Bupropion SR manage to quit within 12 weeks, though it can take people longer.
Let us know if you’re still struggling with cravings at the end of your treatment course and our experts will recommend the best next steps for your health.
What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Bupropion SR?
If you forget your dose of Bupropion, take it as soon as you remember — unless it’s nearly time for your next dose. If it is, simply skip the forgotten tablet and continue as normal. Don’t double your dosage to make up for the missed pill. You should always make sure to leave an eight hour gap between your doses.
If you’ve taken too much Bupropion SR you should contact a doctor straight away.

Bupropion SR: FAQ
Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
Does Bupropion cause weight gain?
Answer:
Weight gain isn’t specifically listed as a side effect of bupropion, but even so, changes in weight can still happen when you take any medication. So in this case, you could find that taking bupropion could lead to you either gaining or losing weight. (Or, of course, your weight could stay the same.) If you’re worried about any side effects you’re getting from Bupropion SR, speak with our clinician. They might be able to suggest another treatment or offer some advice to help.
Do I need a prescription for Bupropion SR?
Answer:
Yes, Bupropion SR is only available with a prescription. This is because it’s not safe for everyone, so your doctor is going to want to make sure that it can be a safe, suitable and effective treatment for you before you start taking it.
How effective is Bupropion SR?
Answer:
Bupropion SR is a proven and effective treatment for smoking cessation. The general consensus is that it’s a more effective method than quitting cold turkey, but slightly less effective than varenicline (Chantix). When compared with NRTs they have a similar success rate in helping you quit - though the jury’s still out about whether or not combining them can make them more effective. [1][2]
Is Bupropion SR similar to any other treatments?
Answer:
Bupropion uses the same active ingredient as Wellbutrin XR, which is an antidepressant. But because they’re made to help you in different ways, they vary in both their dosage and how long the medicine is released for. As an extended-release tablet, the active ingredient is released more slowly in Wellbutrin XR, meaning that you only need to take it once a day.

How is Bupropion SR different from other stop smoking treatments?
Answer:
Aside from nicotine replacement therapies, there is another tablet that you can take to help you quit smoking called Chantix. One of the main differences between them is that they use different active ingredients, which work in different ways. So where bupropion changes how your brain processes dopamine, Chantix (varenicline) blocks it instead. In terms of effectiveness, some studies have suggested that Chantix is more likely to produce results than bupropion. But having said that, everyone is different. What works for you might not necessarily be the same as what works for others.
