What is Nystatin?
Nystatin is a cream you apply directly to the skin around your mouth. It can clear fungal infections, such as Candida, which is often present when people have angular cheilitis.[1]
Although oral fungal infections primarily occur inside your mouth, they can spread to the moist areas on the side of your mouth and cause angular cheilitis or make its symptoms worse.
Applying Nystatin daily can help kill the underlying fungus and allow your body to repair red, cracked skin at the sides of your mouth.
How does Nystatin work?
Nystatin binds to ergosterol, a molecule which acts like a building block for fungal cells. Ergosterol preserves the integrity of fungi, which allows a fungal infection to grow and spread.
By binding to it and tearing open the cell wall of fungal membranes, Nystatin causes fungal cells to leak and eventually die. So applying the cream directly to infected skin can help clear the fungus, allowing your body to repair the damaged skin and improve angular cheilitis symptoms.
What doses of Nystatin are there?
Nystatin cream contains 100,000 units per gram.
The usual dose is to apply a thin layer of cream to affected areas twice a day, but your doctor will tell you exactly how much cream you need to use each day.
How long does Nystatin cream take to work?
Usually, youโll notice that your skin starts to heal between 24-72 hours after first starting treatment with the cream.
But fungal infections can sometimes take up to two weeks to clear, so even if your angular cheilitis symptoms start to improve, itโs important you use the cream for as long as your doctor advises you to.
