Itโs a corticosteroid cream or ointment (although currently we only supply the cream). Corticosteroids are a type of medicine that are used to help to manage inflammation. Youโll apply Mometasone to areas affected by eczema to relieve redness and itching, helping to get an eczema flare-up back under control.
Mometasone works by suppressing the overactive immune response thatโs responsible for inflammation caused by eczema flare-ups. It does this in a few different ways.
Mometasone reduces the production of substances that start and maintain the inflammatory response that characterizes eczema. It also constricts blood vessels near the surface of your skin, which limits the amount of these substances that can reach the skin. Finally, mometasone acts at DNA-level to increase the expression of anti-inflammatory genes, which help to resolve inflammatory responses and protect tissues.[1]
Corticosteroids are different to anabolic steroids, which are used by some people to build muscle, and donโt carry the same risk of side effects.
Mometasone is available in one dose, and comes as a cream or an ointment. Currently, we only supply the cream. This dose is 0.1% w/w, which means each gram of treatment contains 1mg of active ingredient. Ointments are usually better suited for thick, dry, or cracked skin โ while creams are better for inflamed, weepy, or irritated skin. This gives you options for which version of Mometasone best suits your eczema symptoms.
Mometasone is a generic medicine. Itโs named after its active ingredient, which is called mometasone furoate. Itโs a topical corticosteroid that helps manage inflammation and itching caused by atopic eczema.

When we present you with stats, data, opinion or a consensus, weโll tell you where this came from. And weโll only present data as clinically reliable if itโs come from a reputable source, such as a state or government-funded health body, a peer-reviewed medical journal, or a recognised analytics or data body. Always make sure to follow your prescriberโs instructions when youโre using Mometasone. Youโll usually apply one thin layer of Mometasone cream or ointment to parts of your skin affected by eczema once per day. One โfingertip unitโ is enough treatment to cover an area around twice the size of your hand.
You should only cover the treated areas with a dressing if youโve been instructed to do this by your physician.
