What is Amoxicillin Clavulanate Potassium?
Itโs a combination antibiotic thatโs used off-label to treat impetigo. It combines amoxicillin with a beta-lactamase inhibitor called clavulanate potassium to fight off antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Youโll usually take it for 14 days to clear up impetigo infections.
How does Amoxicillin Clavulanate Potassium work?
The two active ingredients in Amoxicillin Clavulanate Potassium work together to fight off persistent impetigo infections. Amoxicillin binds to specific proteins that help link substances called peptidoglycans together which is crucial for the structure of the bacterial cell wall. Without this, the cell wall becomes unstable and the bacteria cannot survive.[1]
Clavulanate Potassium doesnโt fight off the bacteria directly, but instead โprotectsโ amoxicillin so it can do its job. Some bacteria have developed resistance to antibiotics like amoxicillin by producing specific enzymes that break down a key component of the antibiotic. Clavulanic potassium extends amoxicillinโs coverage, and reduces the bacteriaโs resistance to it, so itโs more likely to be effective.[1]
How do Amoxicillin Clavulanate Potassium doses work?
Amoxicillin Clavulanate Potassium comes in two doses, a lower dose containing 500 mg of amoxicillin and 125 mg clavulanate potassium, and a higher dose containing 875 mg amoxicillin and 125 mg clavulanate potassium. We only stock the 875/125 mg dose for treating impetigo.
What are the active ingredients in Amoxicillin Clavulanate Potassium?
Itโs a generic medication thatโs named after its two active ingredients: amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium (sometimes called clavulanic acid).
Amoxicillin is an antibiotic, and clavulanate potassium enhances the effects of it.
