How does Mupirocin work?

Mupirocin works by inhibiting the production of essential proteins. Without these proteins, the bacteria cannot grow or survive, ultimately leading to their death.[2]

Can you use Mupirocin on an open wound?

Yes, Mupirocin can be applied to open wounds and lesions. It’s normal to experience a slight stinging or burning sensation when applying.

Is Mupirocin available over the counter?

No, Mupirocin is only available with a prescription from a doctor. This is so your doctor can check if antibiotics are safe and suitable for you. It also decreases the risk of antibiotic resistance.

What doses of Mupirocin are there?

Mupirocin comes in one dose of 2%. You usually apply a small amount to the affected area for up to 10 days.

How to use Mupirocin

To use Mupirocin:

  1. Gently clean the affected area.
  2. Squeeze a small amount of cream onto a cotton pad or swab.
  3. Apply it to the affected area.
  4. You can cover it with plaster or a bandage.
  5. Repeat this application three times a day.

You should only use Mupirocin for up to 10 days. If your symptoms don’t improve after this time, contact your doctor online.

How long does Mupirocin take to work?

Answer:
Mupirocin works straight away, but it may take up to 10 days for your infection to fully clear. Don’t stop treatment unless advised by your doctor. Stopping treatment early can worsen your symptoms or lead to antibiotic resistance.

You might still have hyperpigmentation or scarring even after the infection clears. This is normal and should fade with time. You can use skincare products like vitamin C to help them heal faster.

Will I get side effects using Mupirocin?

Yes, you might get side effects when using Mupirocin, although not everyone experiences them. Most side effects tend to be mild and tolerable as Mupirocin is applied topically. Side effects include:
