Isosorbide Dinitrate is a type of nitrate vasodilator. This widens blood vessels around your heart, allowing your heart to pump blood through them more easily. It can also improve blood supply to the heart itself.

Angina usually occurs when your heart doesn’t receive enough oxygen-rich blood. Isosorbide Dinitrate improves blood flow to the heart and reduces pressure on it, helping relieve angina symptoms.

How does Isosorbide Dinitrate work?

Isosorbide Dinitrate works by relaxing the smooth muscle around blood vessels around your heart.[1] This widens the blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily , and lowers the pressure on your heart when pumping blood around your body.

How do Isosorbide Dinitrate doses work?

Isosorbide Dinitrate tablets come in three doses: 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg.

How to take Isosorbide Dinitrate

Always follow your doctor’s guidance when taking Isosorbide Dinitrate. Usually, you’ll take one or two tablets (10 mg to 40 mg) two or three times a day. You should take it at the times your healthcare provider has directed you to, to allow for a “nitrate free” period (usually overnight while you’re asleep, leaving at least 14 hours between doses) to ensure your medication remains effective.

Are there any alternatives to Isosorbide Dinitrate?

If Isosorbide Dinitrate isn’t suitable for you, beta-blockers like Atenolol or Metoprolol might be a good alternative. They reduce your heart strain and your heart’s oxygen demand, which means your heart has to work less to pump blood around your body. This should help prevent angina attacks by providing your heart with more oxygen-rich blood with less pressure.

If you’re looking for a fast-acting nitrate to relieve angina symptoms as they occur, Glyceryl Trinitrate could be a good option instead.

How effective is Isosorbide Dinitrate for angina?

Answer:
Isosorbide Dinitrate has proven to be an effective preventative treatment for angina in clinical trials. A study involving twenty individuals with angina were given 5 mg of Isosorbide Dinitrate during treadmill walking. Isosorbide dinitrate started to relieve angina symptoms within two minutes, and provided complete relief after five minutes.[1]

Do I need a prescription for Isosorbide Dinitrate?

Yes. Isosorbide Dinitrate is a potent angina medication, and a healthcare professional will need to check that it’s a safe treatment for you to use. It should never be used alongside medicines like sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil, or vardenafil (treatments for erectile dysfunction), as this could cause your blood pressure to drop significantly.

Will I get side effects from Isosorbide Dinitrate?

Answer:
Isosorbide Dinitrate can cause side effects, just like with any medicine you may take, but they won’t affect everyone. If you experience any of the following side effects, stop taking your tablets and get medical assistance immediately:

  • Trouble breathing or swallowing

  • Swelling in the face, lips, tongue or throat

  • Very itchy skin with a red rash or raised bumps

  • Blistering around the mouth, eyes, genitals, or patchy areas of rash and peeling skin

  • Nausea, vomiting, restlessness, sweating, paleness, feeling faint

  • Angina pain that’s worse than normal


The most commonly reported side effect of Isosorbide Dinitrate (affecting more than 1 in 10 people) is headaches. Other common side effects (affecting less than 1 in 10 people) can include:

  • Light-headedness or dizziness after standing up

  • Tiredness or feeling weak

  • Elevated heart rate


There are more possible side effects associated with Isosorbide Dinitrate than are listed here. If you have any questions or concerns, read the patient package insert or get in touch with your healthcare provider.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Isosorbide Dinitrate?

Answer:
If you accidentally take too much Isosorbide Dinitrate, you might feel drowsy or faint. This is caused by your blood pressure dropping to low levels. If you take too many Isosorbide Dinitrate tablets:

  • Lie down and raise your legs above your torso

  • Tell your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical attention

  • Take your tablets with you so the healthcare staff know exactly what you’ve taken

  • Follow these steps even if you feel well


If you miss a dose of Isosorbide Dinitrate, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. But, if it’s almost time to take your next dose, skip the forgotten dose and carry on as normal from your next scheduled one. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Can I get Isosorbide Dinitrate through private health insurance?
