Jardiance belongs to a group of medication called sodium glucose transporter-2s (SGLT2). These drugs are used to lower the level of sugar in the blood by eliminating it via the urine. It is often prescribed to treat the condition when metformin has been deemed unsuitable.
What is type two diabetes?
Type two diabetes causes the level of sugar in the blood to become too high. It is a lifelong condition that will require regular check-ups and dietary changes in order to manage it. It is thought that there are many with the condition that do not realise they have it. Symptoms include excessive thirst, needing to urinate frequently, chronic fatigue, weight loss, itchiness of the genitals, thrush, wounds taking longer to heal than usual and visual problems. Ethnic background is related to diabetes risks and includes the Chinese, Southern Asians, sub Saharan Africans and African Caribbeans, no matter where they are born. Over 40s, obesity and having a close family member with the condition are also notable risk factors.
How is type two diabetes diagnosed?
Diagnosis for type two diabetes will require speaking to your GP and a blood and urine test to check your blood sugar levels, the results of which may take one to two days. Treatment for diabetes is a mixture of medication and lifestyle changes. It is essential that you keep sugar, fat and salt to a minimum and to avoid skipping meals to maintain a healthy level of blood sugar. This should be combined with regular exercise, at least two and a half hours per week. Exercise can include climbing stairs, walking instead of taking transport or engaging in more strenuous housework. A combination of diet and exercise can lead to losing weight, something that is key for managing the condition’s symptoms. You can track your weight by monitoring your BMI (body mass index).
Jardiance works by blocking the protein SGLT2 in the kidneys. This in turn leads to sugar being eliminated from your system through the urine, managing the levels of sugar in your blood.
