What is Atenolol?
Atenolol belongs to a group of medications called beta-blockers, which work by slowing down your heart rate. Theyโre used to treat heart-related conditions like angina, heart attack, and hypertension, but can also be used off-label to reduce physical anxiety symptoms.
You take Atenolol daily. As well as lowering your heart rate, the tablets reduce your heartโs oxygen demands, which can help prevent angina episodes.
How does Atenolol work?
Atenolol essentially makes your heart work less, which means it can pump blood around your body more easily. This action increases blood flow and reduces blood pressure,1ย which is why Atenolol can be used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure).
By slowing your heart rate and reducing its oxygen demand, beta-blockers prevent angina attacks by helping your heart get the oxygen-rich blood it needs, with less effort.
What doses of Atenolol are there?
Atenolol tablets are available in three strengths: 25mg, 50mg and 100mg.
The starting dose is usually 50mg a day. Your physician might increase the amount you take each day if this isnโt enough to prevent angina episodes.
The maximum amount of Atenolol you can take each day is 200mg.
How long does Atenolol take to work?
Atenolol can start to work in your system shortly after youโve taken your first pill, but it might be one to two weeks before you feel its full benefits.1
Atenolol is prescribed to prevent episodes of angina rather than treating them, so you should continue taking the pills even if you feel well.
