What is Escitalopram?
Escitalopram belongs to a group of medications called SSRIs, which are primarily used to treat mood-related disorders such as anxiety and depression. It works by preventing serotonin from being reabsorbed, which means there is more active serotonin available in your body.
Increased serotonin can help improve your mood, and is known to play a role in controlling the time it takes to ejaculate.[1] Although it’s not licensed to treat PE, Escitalopram can be prescribed off-label if your physician thinks it will help improve your premature ejaculation symptoms.
How does Escitalopram work?
Serotonin (sometimes called 5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT) is a chemical messenger that sends vital signals throughout your body. It’s involved in several processes, and can help regulate mood, sleep, digestion and sexual function.
Antidepressant medications, such as Escitalopram, Sertraline and Fluoxetine, are sometimes prescribed to treat premature ejaculation. By taking a daily Escitalopram tablet, your PE may improve as the drug raises the body’s active serotonin levels.
What doses of Escitalopram are there?
Escitalopram is available as 5mg or 10mg tablets.
Your doctor might suggest starting you on the lowest dose 5mg tablets to see if this improves your PE symptoms. If after a while you feel like it isn’t working well enough, they might move you up to taking 10mg daily.
Escitalopram needs time to work, so it might be several weeks or months before you notice your PE improving.
