What is Nortriptyline?
Nortriptyline belongs to a group of medications known as tricyclic antidepressants. These drugs are prescribed to treat ongoing or severe depression. Tricyclic antidepressants differ from SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), such as citalopram and MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors), such as phenelzine.
How does Nortriptyline work?
Nortriptyline works by increasing the production of two key neurotransmitters in the brain which are related to mood: serotonin and noradrenaline. It also prevents the brain’s nerve cells from reabsorbing these feel-good chemicals, and therefore increases their levels in the brain for prolonged periods.
What is depression?
Depression is a fairly common condition, with one in ten people reporting symptoms at some point in their lives, which may vary in severity. For some people, it can impact on their day-today functioning, especially in social situations. For others, it can be a serious and life threatening disorder that needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency.
Symptoms of depression can vary significantly from person to person, but typical indicators are a feeling of hopelessness, a lack of motivation, lethargy, anxiety and a reduced sex drive.
Exactly what triggers a depressive episode depends on the individual. The condition may be triggered by the loss of a loved one, the end of a relationship or the loss of a job. For others, it may not have an identifiable cause. A diagnosis can be difficult to make in cases where someone is reluctant to seek help.
What treatments are available for depression?
There are many treatments available for people who do report symptoms, which range from medication to talking therapies, and sometimes a combination of the two. Talking therapies include psychotherapy, an ongoing treatment in which you discuss your feelings with a psychotherapist to get to the root causes of the condition.
