What is Hibiclens?

Hibiclens is an antiseptic soap used to disinfect and clean your skin. It can be used to prevent various skin infections, such as folliculitis, a condition where the hair follicles become inflamed.

It doesn’t treat skin infections; you’ll need antibiotics for active bacterial infections.

How does Hibiclens work?

Hibiclens contains 4% chlorhexidine gluconate, a chemical with antiseptic properties. It binds to bacteria on the surface of your skin and kills them. This reduces the risk of future infections and helps eliminate current infections.

Is Hibiclens antibacterial?

Yes, Hibiclens has antibacterial properties. Chlorhexidine binds to bacteria, disrupting their cell membranes, resulting in their death. It also inhibits new bacterial growth.[1]

Does Hibiclens kill fungus?

Hibiclens has antifungal properties and kills fungi by disrupting their cell membranes. It has been shown to effectively treat various fungal infections, including Fusarium keratitis, a fungal eye infection.[2]

Is Hibiclens safe for sensitive skin?

Multiple studies have found Hibiclens to be safe for topical use. The results show it has a very low potential for skin irritation and side effects.[3]

How to use Hibiclens

To use Hibiclens:

  • Wash the affected area with water.
  • Apply a small amount of Hibiclens and wash gently.
  • Rinse it off thoroughly.
  • Avoid using around the eyes and mouth.

Hibiclens can be used after shaving to reduce the risk of skin irritation and infections, particularly for those prone to folliculitis.

Can I get Hibiclens through private health insurance?

Answer:
Most private healthcare plans cover folliculitis treatment, but there may be some that only cover specific brands. So if you’re looking to get Hibiclens and have private health insurance, you should check your plan to make sure it’s covered.

If it isn’t covered, your insurance may cover a similar version. Otherwise, you can always get Hibiclens from an online prescription and pharmacy service.

Can I use Hibiclens on open wounds?

Answer:
Hibiclens shouldn’t be used on open wounds where the outer layer of skin (the epidermis) has been removed. Applying it to raw or exposed tissue can damage healing cells and delay the healing process.

And while you can use Hibiclens on closed wounds, you should only do so if advised by your doctor. If you’re using it on a wound, take extra care to apply and rinse it off gently to avoid worsening it.

How long does Hibiclens take to work?

Answer:
Hibiclens starts working immediately, with effects lasting over 24 hours after rinsing. But it may take a few days to notice an improvement in your symptoms.

Can I use Hibiclens for acne?

Answer:
Hibiclens can be used to treat acne. Its antiseptic properties help prevent acne-causing bacteria. In one study, the results showed that chlorhexidine gluconate effectively reduced pustules (spots filled with pus) and papules (raised bumps).[1]
