The following side effects are very rare, but if you experience any of them, stop taking doxycycline right away and seek emergency medical attention:
- Sudden breathlessness; chest pain; fever; swelling of the eyelids, face, or lips; rash; or itching across your entire body.
- Stomach pain; loss of appetite, severe, persistent, or bloody diarrhea.
- Severe headache with blurred vision, double vision, or loss of vision.
- Widespread and severe blistering of the skin, mouth, eyes, and genitals; skin rash; fever; swollen glands; or the end of your nail separating from the nail bed.
The most common side effects of Doxycycline (affecting up to one in 10 people) are:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Worsening of systemic lupus erythematous (an allergic condition causing joint pain, a skin rash, a fever, and headaches
- Inflammation that affects the heart (pericarditis)
And uncommon side effects that may affect up to one in 100 people include:
- Heartburn
- Vaginal infection
