What is Reglan?

Reglan is a type of medicine called an antiemetic that’s used to prevent nausea and vomiting. It can also help to relieve dizziness and headaches associated with inner-ear conditions like vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis.

Reglan is prescribed off-label when used to treat inner-ear conditions. This means that while all the evidence points to them being a safe and effective treatment for nausea caused by inner-ear conditions, it isn’t officially licensed for this purpose.

How does Reglan work?

Reglan blocks dopamine receptors in the area of your brain responsible for nausea and vomiting. By stopping signals from traveling to these receptors, Reglan should help to relieve feelings of nausea and prevent vomiting.[1]

There’s also evidence that Reglan can speed up how quickly food passes through your digestive system, which may also help to reduce feelings of nausea.

How do Reglan doses work?

Reglan comes in 5 mg and 10 mg tablets. The amount of Reglan you’ll take and for how long will depend on what you’re taking it for, and how severe your nausea is. Always follow your clinician’s instructions when using Reglan.

How to take Reglan

Always follow your clinician’s specific instructions when using Reglan for nausea caused by inner-ear conditions. You’ll usually use it over a short period of time (around five days), and take 5-10 mg every six hours during that time.[1]

Are there any Reglan alternatives?

Answer:
Yes, there are a few options available for nausea caused by inner-ear problems. For milder cases, antihistamines like cinnarizine and cyclizine can be enough to help. These work by blocking histamine receptors in your brain, which should help prevent feelings of nausea. Some, like cinnarizine, can also improve blood flow to your inner ear to help relieve symptoms like dizziness, too.

But if you’re looking for an alternative antiemetic, prochlorperazine could be a good option. It works in the same way as metoclopramide (by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain), and could be an effective alternative if Reglan hasn’t worked.[1]

How effective is Reglan?

Answer:
Metoclopramide, Reglan’s active ingredient, has proven to be an effective treatment for nausea symptoms caused by vertigo. In a study where 200 people were split into two groups—one given metoclopramide and the other dimenhydrinate—both groups experienced improvements to VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) compared to baseline, and there weren’t any significant differences between the two groups.[2] This shows that while it’s an off-label treatment, Reglan can be effective at treating nausea and vomiting caused by inner-ear conditions.

How long does it take Reglan to work?

Answer:
You’ll typically notice metoclopramide tablets working after about 30 to 60 minutes.[3]

Do I need a prescription for Reglan?

Answer:
Yes. Reglan is an off-label treatment, and isn’t suitable for everyone. A healthcare professional will need to check that it’s the right option for you.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Reglan?

Answer:
If you accidentally take too much Reglan, contact your doctor right away. Symptoms of Reglan overdose can include:

  • Uncontrollable movements

  • Drowsiness

  • Fading in and out of consciousness

  • Confusion

  • Hallucinations

  • Heart problems


If you forget to take a dose of Reglan, don’t double up and take twice as much to make up for the missed dose.

Are there any Reglan side effects?

Answer:
Like any treatment you may use, Reglan does come with some risk of side effects. If you experience any of the following side effects, stop using Reglan and speak with your doctor right away:

  • Uncontrollable movements or muscle contractions

  • Rigidity and tremor

  • High fever

  • High blood pressure

  • Convulsions

  • Sweating

  • Increased saliva production

  • Itchy skin rash

  • Swelling in the face, lips, or throat

  • Difficulty breathing


The most common Reglan side effect, affecting over one in 10 people, is drowsiness. The next most common side effects, affecting up to one in 10 people, are:

  • Depression

  • Restlessness

  • Decrease in blood pressure

  • Diarrhea

  • Weakness

Can I get Reglan through private health insurance?

Answer:
It’s always best to check with your health insurance plan formulary to see whether or not Reglan is covered by your health insurance. Your insurance may only cover certain brands (or the generic) of metoclopramide, or may only cover the cost if you get it from specific healthcare providers.

But if you can’t get Reglan on your health insurance, you should still be able to obtain it from a private online pharmacy service – as long as it’s the right treatment for you.
