Invokana belongs to a group of drugs called blood glucose lowering medications, which help the body eliminate blood sugar from the body, reducing issues related with the condition, such as heart disease. It contains the active ingredient canagliflozin, known as an SGLT2 inhibitor.
Type two diabetes is a common condition in the UK, with approximately over 4.5m people suffering from it. Diabetes describes a high level of sugar in the blood, which comes with a variety of symptoms and health risks. The most common early sign of diabetes is excessive thirst and the need to urinate frequently. Fatigue and weight loss often follow, with cuts taking longer to heal than was the case previously. Itchiness around the genitals with recurrent thrush infections may also occur, as might blurred vision. Certain genetic factors will mean you are more at risk of developing the disease, such as age (being over 40), ethnic origin (those from South Asia, the Caribbean, Chinese or sub-Saharan Africa) and obesity (or just being overweight).
Tests for diabetes are quite straightforward, requiring either a urine or blood test to check on the levels of sugar in the body. After diagnosis, you will likely be prescribed a medication to help control these sugar levels and there are many options available. Lifestyle changes are one of the most powerful weapons against the disease - exercise and carefully controlled diet are the most effective. You will then need to have several health check-ups to see how you are managing the condition and whether the risks involved are suitably reduced.
Invokana works by increasing the amount of sugar eliminated in the urine when you pee. Canagliflozin, the active ingredient, is an SGLT2 inhibitor which means it prevents the blood from reabsorbing sugar in the system, allowing it to be expelled during urination. It also has two other benefits for those with type two diabetes. Firstly, it may help some lose weight, a primary cause of the condition. It also increases the amount of water being expelled from the blood, which in turn reduces blood pressure if you suffer from hypertension - this is common for those with this form of diabetes.
Please refer to the leaflet and the instructions given by your prescriber when taking this treatment.
How should it be stored?
Invokana does not require any particular storage instructions, but it should be kept out of the reach of children.
Can I use Invokana while pregnant or breastfeeding?
If you are pregnant or are planning to be pregnant in the near future, you should inform your doctor before starting treatment as another course of action will be required. You should also avoid treatment with Invokana while breastfeeding.
Can I drive while using Invokana?
Invokana should have no effect on your ability to drive, although dizziness has been reported by a small minority of those using it. That being said, use alongside some other diabetes medications can cause other side effects, including blurred vision, which may mean you should avoid driving until you have consulted your doctor.
Am I allergic to any of its ingredients?
Aside from Invokana’s active ingredient canagliflozin, it also contains the following:
Poly (vinyl alcohol)
