How to delay your period

Period delay tablets are employed to suspend menstrual bleeding. They can also be useful in reducing the severity of symptoms related to premenstrual syndrome, such as heavy bleeding and pain. The period delay treatments available here at Treated.com include Norethisterone and Provera.

Norethisterone tablets contain a man-made hormone which replicates the function of progesterone in the body. Norethisterone pills can help to delay the user's period by up to 10 days.

Provera is a treatment for heavy periods and period pain, which can be issued off-label for period delay. It may be useful for women wanting to delay their period who are unable to take Norethisterone, due to having a BMI of 25 or over, or because they smoke.

The pain and discomfort which can often accompany periods is well-known, and does not need to be detailed. Sometimes, this can be a real hindrance to everyday life, and even more so if you have an important occasion coming up, such as an exam, a wedding, or a holiday abroad. Pain and bleeding can be distracting, or make someone feel self-conscious.

Tablets for period delay can help to push the user’s scheduled period back, so that they can enjoy or concentrate on the matter at hand more easily. They are taken three times a day, for the three days before a period is due to begin. The course is then continued as instructed by their doctor.

Norethisterone works by altering the regular menstrual cycle. In the female body, certain processes take place each month to prepare it for pregnancy. One of these is the build up of the lining along the uterine wall (endometrium). This then sheds during menstruation, and is discharged through bleeding.

Shortly before this takes place, levels of the hormone progesterone in the body fall. This is the signal for the uterine lining to shed. The synthetic hormone in Norethisterone tablets works in a similar way to progesterone, and its presence in the body convinces it that the shedding does not yet need to occur, thereby delaying the user’s period. Due to its hormonal ingredient, this pill can also help to soothe symptoms of premenstrual tension such as pain, heavy bleeding and feelings of bloatedness.

Provera contains a different active ingredient called medroxyprogesterone acetate. However, it performs a similar function in treating period pain and heavy periods, and delaying periods; by mimicking the action of progesterone in the body.

Talk to your GP about period delay treatment if you have never used it before. They may need to undertake certain checks to ensure it is safe for you, before issuing a prescription.

Renewing your prescription for Norethisterone online with us is easy. Take our questionnaire, and your answers will be checked by a practising doctor. Once approved, your treatment will be dispensed at our UK pharmacy and shipped to you by tracked courier.

Types of Treatments

Types of Treatment

One treatment often issued for period delay is Norethisterone, which is a tablet containing a synthetic hormone. It is taken three times a day by the user, from three days prior to their period, for a specified duration.

Norethisterone isn’t suitable for women who smoke, or are overweight, as it can increase the risk of blood clots. In such cases, Provera may be preferable for the treatment of heavy periods, period pain, or providing period delay.

When used in period delay, Provera is prescribed off-label.

How does it work?

The active ingredient in Norethisterone is an artificial hormone of the same name. It works by mimicking the action of progesterone in the body, and regulating and limiting the buildup and shedding of the endometrial wall.

Medroxyprogesterone acetate, the active ingredient in Provera, is also a synthetic hormone, and works in the same way.

What are the side effects?

More information on side effects can be found on the relevant product page. The most common side effects for Norethisterone include feeling or being sick, headaches and dizziness.

Can I take them with other medications?

Whether you can use this treatment will depend on which other medicines you are currently using. Make sure you let your doctor know if you are on any other medication, be it prescription, non-prescription or remedial.

Q&A

What kind of medicine is Norethisterone?

Norethisterone is a generic version of the pill containing the same ingredient, known as Primolut N, which is made by Bayer. It performs the same function and is an effective product for period delay and PMS relief.

Provera contains medroxyprogesterone acetate, which is a different active ingredient, but performs a similar function.

Should I take Norethisterone or Provera?

Make an appointment with your GP if you want to delay your period, and have not used Norethisterone or any other treatment before. They will need to assess your overall health prior to drawing up a prescription.

Norethisterone is not suitable for women who are overweight (have a BMI of 25 or more) or smoke. In these cases, Provera is more likely to be suitable.

Are there different side effects?

Yes. Detailed information can be found in the leaflet supplied, but side effects of Norethisterone and Provera include headaches, dizziness and feeling or being sick.

Is it right for me?
