Insomnia is the medical term given to the inability to sleep. Around one third of people in the UK are thought to experience the condition at some point in their lives, but it is much more common among older people. Even though it may not seem like an illness worthy of visiting a doctor about, sleep is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle, and you should address the issue if you feel as though you aren’t getting enough.

There are a number of reasons why someone might have difficulty sleeping. A big factor in the cause of insomnia is anxiety. Taking measures to reduce stress can help to induce better and more consistent sleep patterns. Diet and lifestyle can also be major causes of insomnia; for instance, eating late at night or drinking too much caffeine. Again, these issues can be rectified by making adjustments to your food and drink habits.

Sometimes, however, the problem may be rooted in a physical cause. Melatonin is a hormone which the body, more particularly the pineal gland, releases in response to darkness at night time. It works on certain receptors in the brain, and tells the body to begin shutting down, promoting the need for sleep. However, as we get older, our natural capacity to produce this hormone becomes reduced, leading to symptoms of insomnia.

Circadin is a sleeping pill for primary insomnia (such as that which is caused by a lack of melatonin) in over 55s. The active ingredient in the medication is a synthetic version of melatonin, and it promotes sleep by supplementing the body’s natural levels of this hormone, and helping the user to sleep more consistently.

When you buy treatment for insomnia online, it is important to ensure you do so from a registered seller. Our UK pharmacy only stocks medicines which are safe and licensed for sale, sourcing them from reputable wholesalers or the companies which manufacture them.

To find out if Circadin can help you, take our short medical questionnaire. Your responses will be assessed by a registered practitioner, who will issue a prescription for your medicine if it is suitable for you. Your order will then be passed on to our dispensing pharmacy, who prepare your items and ship them via tracked 24-hour courier. In most cases, you’ll receive your medication the following day.

Types of Treatment

Cognitive practices and certain lifestyle adjustments can help to ease insomnia symptoms, and improve sleep hygiene. However more severe cases may require medication. Circadin is one such example, which is a tablet engineered by Lundbeck. It is taken one or two hours before bedtime and aids peaceful sleep.

How do they work?

At nighttime, the body releases a hormone which promotes sleep. This is called melatonin, and is produced by the pineal gland. As people get older, their ability to produce this hormone naturally becomes diminished. Circadin works by topping up the body’s levels of this hormone, thereby aiding sleep.

What are the side effects?

As with any medicine, there is a risk of potential side effects when using Circadin. These include dry mouth, skin irritation and night sweats.

Can I take them with other medications?

Tell your prescriber if you are using other treatments during consultation for this product, as Circadin may interact with or affect the function of them.

Question and Answers

What’s the difference between the medications?

The treatment of insomnia differs depending on what is causing the condition. In cases where symptoms are being caused by stress or certain lifestyle factors, taking measures to rectify these issues can help. However, those who are of a certain age who might be experiencing problems due to a drop in melatonin levels might need to consider using medication.

Should I take Circadin?

This product is only suitable for people over 55, who are experiencing primary insomnia. If this does not apply to you, speaking to a doctor about your insomnia symptoms is the recommended course of action.

Are there different side effects?

Circadin does cause different side effects than other forms of insomnia treatment. These may include increased nighttime perspiration, dry mouth and skin irritation.
