Description

Athlete’s foot, also known as tinea pedis, is a highly common fungal infection located on the feet. It is very contagious and can be transferred from person to person. It is estimated that one in four people will contract the condition at some point during their lives.

Athlete’s foot might be more commonly seen in those who participate in sports or regularly wear trainers as footwear. It is also possible to pick up a fungal infection in communal showers. The condition is caused by an abundance of a certain type of fungi known as dermatophytes. The human body is home to a number of different fungi that are usually harmless when the balance is maintained. This balance can be easily upset if the environment is warm, moist and without air.

Most athlete’s foot infections attack the skin in between the toes, starting with the little toes. An itchy rash may develop on the skin and it may begin to flake and crack in patches. The skin may even split and become painful. The extent of the infection can vary greatly between patients. It can spread to all of the toes and the soles of the feet.

The condition is not usually serious, and treatment isn’t always required. However, it can sometimes lead to other fungal infections, such as infected toe nails, which can be harder to cure. If you have an athlete’s foot infection it is important to be mindful of others so you do not risk passing on the infection. Do not share clothes, towels or shoes. Always wash and dry your hands after applying any treatment.

It is possible to prevent athlete’s foot by keeping your feet as clean and dry as possible. After washing your feet take some time to thoroughly dry the skin in between your toes. Wear clean socks every day and choose natural fibres such as cotton, wool or silk. Avoid walking barefoot in public areas such as changing rooms and do not share towels.

Athlete’s foot can usually be resolved with a topical antifungal treatment. This is available in various application methods including creams, sprays and powders. A course of antifungal treatment should be completed as prescribed to ensure that the fungus does not come back once treatment has stopped.

The treatments we offer for athlete’s foot include: Lamisil and Terbinafine creams (both containing terbinafine) and Daktarin cream and powder (both containing miconazole). These antifungals work by penetrating the cell membrane of the fungus, and creating holes so that vital constituents leak out. This causes the fungus to die, and clears the infection.

Types of Treatment

Athlete’s foot doesn’t always need treatment. Sometimes, keeping the feet dry and clean can help symptoms to clear up on their own.

However, more troublesome symptoms can be treated with antifungal medication, usually in the form of creams, powders and sprays.

Lamisil and terbinafine creams contain the same active ingredient, and both work in the same way. Lamisil is the branded product whereas terbinafine is the generic version.

Daktarin cream and powder are also available for athlete’s foot. These contain an agent called miconazole, which is also an antifungal.

How do they work?

Athlete’s foot is caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes. The active ingredient in antifungal treatments such as terbinafine and miconazole interferes with the cellular makeup of the fungi, thus inhibiting their growth and killing them off.

What are the side effects?

As with all medication, there is a possibility that patients who use antifungal creams may experience unwanted side effects. Common potential side effects include itching and flaking at the site of application. It is important to read the full list of side effects provided in the patient information leaflet before you use a product to fight your fungal infection.

Can I take them with other medications?

It depends on what other treatments you are taking. It is important that you make the prescribing clinician aware of any other medications you are using.

Questions and Answers

What’s the difference between the medications?

Lamisil and terbinafine cream for the treatment of athlete’s foot use the same active ingredient and work in the same way. Lamisil is a branded product and terbinafine is a generic medication. The excipient ingredients may be slightly different, but the action of the treatments should be exactly the same.

Daktarin, which is available as a powder or a cream, also contains an antifungal ingredient (miconazole). This works in a similar way.

Which treatment should I use?

If you have athlete’s foot your doctor or pharmacist will normally suggest the most suitable form of treatment. Terbinafine and miconazole work in the same way to attack the fungus.

Terbinafine is available as a cream for athlete’s foot, whereas Daktarin can be applied as a cream or powder.

Are there different side effects?

Terbinafine and miconazole can both potentially cause similar side effects. You should read the coordinating patient information leaflet to make sure that you understand the risk of side effects.
