Nausea is defined as the feeling of sickness, or need to be sick. This often leads to vomiting, the reflex by which a person is actually sick. When a person experiences this, there is always a reason for it. It may be due to the ingestion of food or drink contaminated with bacteria; or be the result of a viral infection. A person may also get these feelings during the early stages of pregnancy; this is known as morning sickness.
For some, nausea and vomiting are traits which might be encountered during a migraine. This is an illness which is characterised most famously by a severe, throbbing and intense headache. But there are several different types, some of which may include additional symptoms.
Whereas some may find that pain takes hold suddenly, others may notice warning signs before a headache sets in. The presence of these additional symptoms is referred to as ‘aura’. The symptoms of aura include problems with sight, such as black patches, or flashing lines, as well as an increased sensitivity to sounds. Other cases may involve warning signs, or aura, but no resultant headache.
Many people who get these sorts of headaches will experience nausea, and possibly even vomiting during an attack. For this reason, treatment for migraines may be issued in more than one form: pain relief to combat headache; and antiemetic medication to reduce feelings of queasiness. Buccastem M is an example of a treatment which may be designated for nausea related to migraine.
Motion sickness, which is experienced during air, sea or land travel, can be another triggering factor in nausea. In travel sickness, nausea results when the balance centres in the middle ear sense movement, but the eyes do not. This then causes conflicting signals to be sent to the brain, which aggravates the vomiting centre. Phenergan or Cyclizine may be prescribed for cases of this type.
Other causes of nausea may be the presence of irritating substances or toxins in the body. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments often trigger feelings of sickness, due to their chemical presence in the blood, which sends signals to the chemoreceptor trigger zone, or CTZ. Sometimes, the upwards regurgitation of food by the digestive tract can also send vomit-inducing messages to the brain, and cause nausea.
The process which leads to nausea involves the transmission of signals from one part of the body to the brain. The CTZ, which is located in the brain, receives and interprets messages sent from other parts of the body, carried by a neurotransmitter called dopamine. These messages are then relayed to the vomiting centre, also located in the brain, and this activation causes feelings of sickness.
Treatments like Buccastem M, Cyclizine and Phenergan work by either interrupting this passage of signals, or the brain’s interpretation of them. They do this by making receptors in the vomiting centre less susceptible to chemical messages. This stops the chain of transmissions and alleviates nausea.

Types of Treatment
Which treatment you use to combat symptoms will depend on the cause. Persistent episodes of nausea and vomiting may necessitate a visit to your GP; whereas severe cases, or the presence of blood in vomit, may be indicative of a condition requiring urgent attention.
Milder instances, which can be a secondary effect of other conditions such as a migraine, can be relieved with drugs such as Buccastem M. This is a tablet which is placed in the cavity between the gum and the top lip.
When induced as a result of travel sickness, other treatments, such as Cyclizine or Phenergan may be used to combat nausea.
How do they work?
The working constituent of Buccastem M is a substance called prochlorperazine, which has antiemetic properties. It functions by stopping the brain from translating certain signals which can encourage symptoms of sickness to occur.
What are the side effects?
It is essential to be aware of the side effects your treatment may cause, as some may be a sign that you need to go to the doctor.
The most common side effects of Buccastem M are feelings of irritation in the application site. The side effects associated with the other items may vary. Refer to the product pages for more information.
Can I take them with other medications?
If you are taking any other treatments, let your doctor know. It may not be safe to use these products in conjunction with drugs for high blood pressure or an irregular heartbeat, tranquillisers or sedatives.
What’s the difference between the medications?
There are numerous drugs available for nausea, but which one you use will depend on the cause.
For instances caused by migraines, Buccastem M is among those recommended, as it works in the brain to stop the relaying of signals to the vomiting centre; whereas Cyclizine and Phenergan contain antihistamines used to treat motion sickness, as well as nausea caused by other factors.
Should I take Buccastem M, Phenergan, or Cyclizine?
As indicated above, it’s really down to what is causing your nausea, as each product is effective at treating particular types.
If you are experiencing nausea and think you may be suitable for one of our treatments, take our questionnaire. Our doctor will be able to help you determine whether your chosen product is a viable option for you.
Are there different side effects?
Yes. The most common side effects caused by Buccastem M are feelings of irritation at the site of administration, between the top lip and the gum.
The side effects recorded by those using other treatments may vary.
